I told you earlier this week that Spring Festival is coming! As a special treat, Budgeford posted a dev diary just on the Spring Festival of 2010.

Returning this year for certain is The Hedge Maze and the new and improved horse races. Mostly the dev diary talk about the new feature this year “Stomp-A-Shrew”.

Budgeford goes into good detail on how they had to play around to get the new system to work. Making the shrews level 65 made the lower levels miss too often. Make them level 1 and they won’t attack the higher levels. The game sounds as if it will be sort of similar to the Beer Fight of Yule only instead of a bat you’ll have boots and instead of people, you’ll be hitting shrews. Sounds like good fun!

Each week we ask you to share your successes in Middle Earth with the rest of the community. Post a comment letting us know what you’ve accomplished this past week. We will pick comments at random to read on the podcast giving you a chance for a little shout out for yourself!

Our shout-outs are only as good as the information we get so remember:

  1. Don’t forget to add your character name, what server you play on and if you like, add your Kinship if you have one. Hard to give you a Shout-Out if you don’t include it!
  2. Please keep your posts brief. We won’t be able to read full novels of your adventures. At least make it so we can easily sum it up!
  3. Do not be afraid to post any of your achievements. We don’t care if you just saved Archet or cleared out Dol Guldor. We want to hear from you!

These shout outs will appear in Episode 30 of A Casual Stroll to Mordor Podcast. Comments for this thread will be closed after recording as this is a weekly thing. If you missed this week’s cut off, don’t fret! A new thread just like this one will appear next Friday!

war in the north

I just stumbled upon details of "The Lord of the Rings: War in the North". I was totally unaware that this game was under development, associating most of the film related tie-ins as being over and done with. However, you don't invest this sort of time and more importantly, money, into a product you think will fail. Tolkien related IP sells. As do action based games. Add a co-op element and you may well have a product that crosses over multiple genres. Below is the press release that appeared yesterday on the IGN website.

The Lord of The Rings Goes to War
Mature RPG explores new areas of Middle Earth.

US, March 18, 2010 - J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth saga continues in 2011 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 with the release of Snowblind Studios' action-RPG, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Based on events mentioned in the novels and included in Tolkien's annotations, War in the North reveals the full details of a battle few know, but one that helped shape the fight against Sauron.

The first M-rated (17+) Lord of the Rings title, War in the North uses elements of the books and the films. That means you can expect some of the film actors' likenesses (and perhaps voices) as well as elements of Middle Earth never shown in the movies.

Up to three players can join forces online to battle Sauron's army with "interdependent co-op play." Expect some of the staples of RPG gaming, including upgradeable skills, weapons and abilities. Grinding has not been confirmed.

Little else is known about War in the North, but the debut trailer suggests it's going to kick ass.
