For Developer Appreciation Week, I’d like to thank Allan “Orion” Maki, Senior Game Designer from Turbine.

I’ve enjoyed Lord of the Rings Online since it was released in 2007 and have always been impressed by the level of detail from the books that Turbine was able to include in the world. Yet, the game had some rough edges in the earlier zones that don’t exist in the later content (looking at you Lonelands).

This brings me to why I’m singling Allan out specifically, he’s done a lot of work to redesign and polish up the early game experience in Middle-earth. Most recently was a revamp of the Lonelands, which are much much improved, and making the Volume 1 epic quest line solo-able. Even better though, was the way he went about the epic quest change. Orion didn’t just nerf the quest line so that it is solo only. He implemented a character buff called Inspired Greatness that scales based on the size of the fellowship. It’s always a good thing to more options for completing quests, and this buff allows players to solo if they want or duo or still go with a full fellowship.

LOTRO. Value for money?

LOTRO value for money

Iarwain Annatar raised the issue of value for money on the LOTRO EU forum. However, it is a more complex issue than you would initially think. How can you effectively compare products from different genres, say LOTRO with COD MW2? Is there a common definition of "satisfaction" or "enjoyment" the consumer gets from the product? How can you quantify such subjective data?

Well I thought it would be fun to give it a go.

I was planning on writing this on Friday, but time sort of slipped away :) . I did jump back into Friday and managed to get some things accomplished, I finished off an Armor set and quest line and completed some deeds.

Read on for more! (I break the posts up to keep the front page semi-clean and to keep more posts on it).

Getting back into a LOTRO state of mind

I’ve been very distracted this past week, but things are starting to get back more to LOTRO.  Part of my problem in LOTRO has been a lack of motivation as I currently don’t have all that much left to do on my mains.  I know I do have things to do, but without time to raid, I’m not sure it is really worth it.  So I probably will continue on some of those paths but also think about either working on my Captain (level 62) or one of my alts – most likely my Runekeeper.  I have another post in the works on skirmish difficulty that will probably come out in the next day or so as well as my next segment on the LOTRO Reporter covering the Warden’s journey to level 45.

For this post, I mainly wanted to share various links and blogs that I’m come across the past couple of days.

Pets deserve emotes too

I love my pets. Everytime I play an alt these days, it is inevitably a pet-less class (since I have no captain) and I feel like I’m missing something as if I were leaving the house without my cell.

It doesn’t seem to be specific to a certain pet either. I typically use my Lynx when in MoNF, my Bog-Lurker when in KoM, my Sabertooth when in a skirmish, and the others when the situation requires. Just that presence of another (pretend) being next to me is what I miss.

Pets don’t make me feel like I’m not playing solo though. They are no substitute for a human being (at least not in Middle Earth). Still, when I come back to my LM after an alt excursion, I pull out my pet and just want to give him/her a good cuddle. Imagine if he/she could then /purr back at me! Or /cuddle or /snuggle! Maybe I’m getting a little too excited about this, but it would be nice if my pet could return the affection I give him/her so freely.

Project Altoholism: Levels 1 – 20

Before going into the levels of 20-30 for my characters, I wanted to give a bit of thought process on how I felt about the leveling of characters through 1-20.  Take for granted that these are just my opinions and you can take them or leave them as you wish.  Unfortunately, this will be somewhat incomplete as my Lore-master and Guardian were both leveled quite a bit ago time wise (when I first bought and played at release in 2007), so I can’t really tell you what it’s like currently.  Perhaps some of our readers can chime in there.

class guardian My advice for Guardians would be to stick with a main-hand weapon and shield and always be using Guardian’s Defence as it’s your only real “stance” until 12 when you get Guardian’s Parry (which, good or bad, I never have had much use for) and then level 20 when you can try getting used to Overpower.  Just a thought though:  If you are primarily going to be tanking with your Guardian, it’s best to use Guardian’s Defence as much as possible with a shield and main-hand weapon as this is what you’ll be using when tanking.  A good way to practice tanking is to always fight as if you were actually tanking; albeit a much slower way of leveling.
