“Tell the Community Team” is where Turbine asks for the players to give them direct and specific feedback about a specific topic. This is really a fantastic opportunity for you to give your thoughts and opinions about the game directly to Turbine to think about.

These “Tell the Community Team” questions focus on Add-ons and UI Skins. They have three questions they are looking for you to give them feedback on:

  1. Visit the official thread to answer the poll “Do you use the stock/standard UI skin or a custom UI skin when playing LOTRO?”
  2. Do you feel UI add-ons would be a positive or negative addition to LOTRO?
  3. If LOTRO permitted UI add-ons, name two you would find most useful.

Next Tuesday, May 4th, we will be interviewing The Tolkien Professor a.k.a. Dr. Corey Olsen of Washington College.

If you’re not familiar with Dr. Corey Olsen, he is a tenure-track professor who has not only started a podcast discussing all of Tolkien’s literary works, but who has also been publishing the course he is teaching this semester which discusses the Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.  He can also be found on Facebook and Twitter where he makes announcements and answers questions.

Each week we ask you to share your successes in Middle Earth with the rest of the community. Post a comment letting us know what you’ve accomplished this past week. We will pick comments at random to read on the podcast giving you a chance for a little shout out for yourself!

Our shout-outs are only as good as the information we get so remember:

  1. Don’t forget to add your character name, what server you play on and if you like, add your Kinship if you have one. Hard to give you a Shout-Out if you don’t include it!
  2. Please keep your posts brief. We won’t be able to read full novels of your adventures. At least make it so we can easily sum it up!
  3. Do not be afraid to post any of your achievements. We don’t care if you just saved Archet or cleared out Dol Guldor. We want to hear from you!

These shout outs will appear in Episode 35 of A Casual Stroll to Mordor Podcast. Comments for this thread will be closed after recording as this is a weekly thing. If you missed this week’s cut off, don’t fret! A new thread just like this one will appear next Friday!

Guide to Lore-master Pets

Gorandir Every time I see a Lore-master and his pet I turn a little green with envy at their fortune to be able to call cuddly animals to their side. I have a Lore-master back on Gladden that has been sorely neglected since I moved to Landroval and I must admit the draw to roll a new one just to play with the pets is very tempting thought to me.

Sure there a lot more neat things Lore-masters are able to do other than just summon a pet but their summoning of a pet is very unique. I also feel it fits my personal play-style a bit better than the Captain and his pet as I do not enjoy melee combat. I’m not trying to belittle Lore-master’s other talents in any way but this post is purely devoted to their furry companions and how to “catch them all”!

codemasterslogo[1]There’s a new contest going on at Codemasters where the prize is to visit the Codemasters headquarters and join a raid with staff! Fun!

Codemasters headquarters is in Warwickshire, UK where they will take you on a tour of their office, raid with you and provide lunch. You’ll also get a little goodie bag! The raid event will be in English so it could be difficult if you don’t know enough English to converse with them.

SWINGS & ROUNDABOUTS

With mounting worries about the LOTRO’s future after the Warner Bros buyout, allied to speculation about Turbine’s financial health (WB wouldn’t have bought it if it wasn’t profitable or it wouldn’t have been sold if it was in good health – take your pick!), there has been a marked tendency for observers, educated and otherwise, to ascribe the apparent decline in the game’s quality over the last year to the lifetime subscription experiment. While conceding the value of the original financial shot in the arm during LOTRO’s early days, the argument goes, we lifetime subscribers are now parasitic on the game, contributing nothing to development. Indeed, some forum posts have suggested, lifetime subscribers are largely responsible for the current doldrums. By the same token, many lifetimers moan that for these reasons, Turbine regards them as less that the dust on its feet, and completely fails to take their interests to heart – the not illogical implication here being that this particular group of players is more likely to be picky and demanding.

I say that’s rubbish. It’s true that lifetimers no longer pay a monthly subscription; on the other hand, this scenario completely ignores the crucial fact that lifetime subscribers actually represent a large and essentially captive pool of customers for paid expansions. Let me put it this way: say that a monthly subscriber, cheesed off by the paucity of content since Vol. III/Book 1 was released earlier this year, decides to cancel his subscription on 1 May. From this point on, both the lapsed subscriber and a lifetime subscriber are contributing the same amount to Turbine’s kitty, namely nothing. However, let’s be optimistic and say that on 1 November, Turbine release a wonderful new boxed expansion, with a new landmass and even (as long as we’re dreaming) a fully revised LI system, retailing for about 30 euros. My guess is that at that point, the vast majority of lifetime subscribers, even those who perhaps haven’t logged on since early summer, will fork out for the expansion – after all, the game hasn’t cost them anything for over half a year, and what’s more, there is little or no hassle involved. However, what are the chances that lapsed monthly subscribers will do the same, given that just buying the box won’t be enough – they’ll also have to go to the trouble and expense of re-subscribing?
