This week I’m going to look at something I’ve been meaning to cover for a long time – user interface (UI). UI customisation is a very personal thing and there’s a wide range of setups which will work well for different people, but there are some good general principles that you should think about. I’ll discuss some of these principles and go over my personal setup which might give people some ideas. The main areas of UI customisation are toolbar layout, plugins and screen layout and I’ll look at each of these in turn.

I was in the middle of making a new Ranger’s outfit (I know big surprise lol) and decided to go with a color I had not used before. A white based Hunter/Ranger outfit seemed unique enough and appealed to me. Having completed it I quickly received a flood of tells remarking on what a cool looking Assassin’s Creed outfit I had. Over the next following days references to someone named Altair and someone named Ezio kept popping up. Being as old as I am and out of touch with the popular games of today I had to Google these characters to find out what everyone was talking about. And there, on the first few images, I saw what seemed to be my outfit. I decided to turn this into a tribute to the characters of Assassin’s Creed.Read the rest of this entry »

What We have been up to
Its been a heck of a time since we last posted, as always when we come creeping back from a long break its a confession of still playing the game, but having a bit less time so neglecting the blog. Its the preferable way round to do it for us, but not so much fun for our readers so sorry about that!
As I said though, we have been up to plenty in our online absence. Firstly we moved kinships on our original main characters; Azbarak, Elgalandir, and Chumbo, from Heroes of Eriador to Ainulindele. It was not a sudden decision, or one we did with any animosity, simply that over the last year or two our focus and attitude towards those characters, and the game has shifted, and Heroes, whilst still and excellent kin, had grown a lot, and was focussed much more on larger group content, and tougher level content, just at the time where we were deciding to scale our ambition back and perhaps look at 3 mans, and the odd 6 or skirmish as our endgame goal. It was a tough decision, as 4 years is a long time to play and chat with some of the folks there, but we still have contact with many of them through the game, and the plethora of social media available these days and we hope that the kin carries on thriving, who knows, our focus may change again and we may be back? We have been with Ainulindele a few months now, and they seem to suit us very well, I have only quested and chatted, and run a couple of three mans, but it is a welcome change of pace, and I think we will enjoy it there.Read the rest of this entry »

Unwearied then were Durin’s folk;
Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.

It’s been a while since I’ve discussed my altoholism and everything that goes a long with it. So, I thought I would write a little update as to what is going on with it so that those who were following the project would know what’s going on.
With the release of The Rise of Isengard and all that went along with it I found myself in a unique position to level up my main character (my Guardian) for the first time in a long time. Now while I wasn’t the fastest leveler in the world I did eventually get to 75 and from there I had two things occur that changed the way I played the game. First, a couple of kinmates who I’ve known for quite a while who wanted to organize a weekly run for 3-man/6-man instances for fun and to gear up our characters; which I more than happily accepted! Secondly, we had a several individuals in the kinship who started to organize end-game raiding runs. These two opportunities combined into a unique opportunity for me to once again start dipping my toes into an MMO’s end-game content on a fairly regular basis; which is something I haven’t done in quite a long time. So with much enthusiasm I headed into the end-game content full-force.
Unfortunately the amount of focus it takes for me to build up a character in LOTRO combined with my other out-of-game projects meant that something had to go on the chopping block; and so my alts fell to the wayside. (Although before the dungeon-running and raids got into full-swing I did manage to get my Champion up to 75 and other various characters up to level 51-53.) Eventually the focus on my main character became so prevalent that even my passion for leveling alts quickly dwindled. And when I finally got back to them I made a huge mistake in prioritizing their leveling schedule by their crafting abilities rather than by what actually sounded fun to me. You can probably see why I began favoring playing my Guardian even more after that point since to me leveling an alt began to represent obligation rather than entertainment.Read the rest of this entry »
