Cebelia was the second character that I ever created, but in four years she is still little played and is languishing at level 35. I plan to level her up at some point, honest! As yet, she is not a priority project, but I made a point of bringing her out for the Anniversary Festival. I’m glad that I did because she won a Lossoth Steed in the envelope quest. Just because she is not currently being levelled doesn’t mean that she can’t look good.

So yesterday Massively did what they should have done instead of their pseudo-news post regarding STO developer Borticus’  comments on lock boxes, and published an editorial in their regular Perfect Ten column and that focused on lock boxes. While I’m not a fan of lock boxes myself, I can see where market realities make them a necessary evil, but it’s most definitely a slippery slope.

Anyway, as Justin says in his article, lock boxes are gambling. You are paying real and/or in-game (varying by MMO) money for a chance to win a prize. That’s no different from a slot machine in Vegas, buying a state lottery ticket, or buying a raffle ticket at a school fundraiser. But like many other activities, gambling itself isn’t wrong, it’s that it can be abused.

I’m loving Ambermist’s challenges – really fun to do and to read how others have responded.  Its also nice to have some direction for a change, especially as currently both I and my toddler are cold-afflicted again ;)

so… this week’s challenge – my main characters… this could be lengthy so be warned :P

Hill-kern of Angmar

The Hill-men were the descendents of the indigenous Men who inhabited Middle-earth before the return of the Númenóreans. The Dunlendings were one branch of Hill-men; the ancestors of the Men of Bree, another. In the Third Age, the Hill-men of northern Eriador became subjects of the kingdom of Arnor, but after Arnor fell, the Hill-men of Rhudaur turned to evil and allied with the realm of Angmar. In LOTRO, Turbine has presented some of the descendants of Rhudaurian Hill-men as having remained in the service of Angmar (such as the Corcur and the Trév Duvárdain), while others (such as the Trév Gallorg, and presumably additional clans, though we do not meet them) have returned to an independent, nomadic lifestyle in the very shadow of the land of Angmar. According to the LOTRO Lorebook, these clans established a neutral settlement, ”a great tent city they named Aughaire, the Meeting-place. Here, the clans trade in furs, meats and produce, medicines, and slaves.”

DocHoliday's MMO Saloon DocHoliday's MMO Saloon - LOTRO, Secret World, & Rift with an End-Game View

One of my favourite resources while levelling up was the old mmorsel “easy ranks of virtues” pages, particularly for Valour and Innocence which I knew would be useful virtues. It gave me a good plan as I was going through various zones as to which deeds I should go out of my way a little bit to try to knock off or at least make a start. Unfortunately that site has not been updated since RoI which means that there’s been two updates to the max virtue rank since then and it also doesn’t take into account the moria virtue revamp that came with RoI. So the column today is going to both be a quick discussion of good virtue setups for lore-masters as well as a rough guide on how to get some of the most relevant virtues up to 14 with, hopefully, minimal pain.

I should note that there is a wealth of conflicting information on the web about what, exactly, changed with the RoI virtue revamp and unfortunately a lot of older resource sites like Burgzerg and mmorsel being inactive, and the “official” lore-book being hopelessly unreliable, there’s no updated and trustworthy source. All I’m certain of is that some (but not all) of the old +2 rank virtues got changed to +1 and that some of the old quest-completion deeds got changed to different deeds. Unfortunately I can’t now go back and check what these deeds currently award seeing as I’ve already earned them and I don’t know of any 100% reliable source of updated information. This post generally relies on the information on this LOTRO wiki page, except where I know it to be incorrect (eg. I was able to see on an alt that the Moria morroval slayer only awards +1 innocence now, not +2).
