It was just last week that I brought up the issue about the LOTRO Store being advertised in the different loading screens. Today, our day of “rest” after our weekend vacation I went over to LOTRO Interface to update my plugins and to download any new ones that have been created. It was here that I saw that someone had done something different on the site. Something so simple and yet so enterprising that I thought it was worth pointing out to others who might be interested in removing these advertisements from their own client.
A player by the name of Ganzor has put together a collection of files into one .zip file and renamed them so that they match the name of the art that is located in your <LOTRO DIR>\raw\eng\logo directory. The files that he has used are from Tara Reuping, but I would assume that most digital art would work as long as the files were used to match the files that are currently within the directory. And while there are some legal issues that could be brought up concerning the distribution of someone else’s artwork if it was done without their consent, I think that the greater solution and the effort that has been made by Ganzor here is fantastic.
Narrel writes today about how LUA scripting came about for LOTRO in the most recently released Dev Diary. He was hired as a game systems engineer for LOTRO in late 2007 and eventually “…became the ‘go-to guy’ for UI on my team.” Dissatisfied with the current UI he eventually started working with “ForsakenArcher” and “Agiclaw”, to of the internal tools engineers at Turbine, and they began discussing, planning and working on a prototype for the LUA system. To paraphrase, after internal testing, meetings, and with help from “Frosty” they were given the approval and the opportunity to introduce it with the Volume 3.2 testing.
So what does LUA do and what is it capable of? Well, quite a bit actually, but the implementation in LOTRO has actually been limited on purpose by Turbine.
Yesterday afternoon Narel posted in the LOTRO official forums a very clear statement of what LUA in LOTRO will mean.
Why UI Plugins?
…no single version of a UI element will ever be ideal for all players everywhere. What one player loves about part of the UI can send the player standing next to them reeling into a frothing rage of frustration.
We finish up the Summer Festival goodies we were trying for. Goldenstar is a Lucky Duck! Merric is also a little closer to finishing up the lucky duck deed. We’ve purchased almost all the summer items we can think we need at this point and may be just about done with the Summer Festival.
Merric got his burglar to 35 and has a mini-rant about the quest that you do to be able to ride the fast horse.
Meghan “Patience” Rodberg was a special guest on Stuncast episode 5 released yesterday. Meghan announced (at about 37 minutes in) that LOTRO will be adding the use of Lua script to allow player created add-ons (called mods) for the game.
If you’re not aware, Lua is a programming language that allows someone to create a mod that alters the interface or even use information from the game depending on Turbine’s preferences. Scripts like this are widely used to create mods for World of Warcraft and other games.
This week we talk about things we did this week was quite a bit!
Goldenstar got the new spring festival mount on three of her characters. Goldenstar also made two new alts a Lore-master and a Hunter. The hunter is absolutely adorable so picture has been included so you can enjoy the cuteness. She also participated in a run of Barad Gularan with the kin.
