Welcome to How to be a Monster, this was inspired by the vast majority of LotRO players not taking advantage of a huge part of the game…monster play.  I understand, you tried it already, died several times and vowed never to come back again.  Maybe you went so far as to make the dreaded pinky promise.  Well the goal of this article is to show you both the good and the bad of monster play and hopefully help you mark or even fill in the pits that most players fall into.  I will be doing this by telling you the good and bad experience that I have day by day and a recommendation on how to avoid the “pit” that I, and many others, sometimes will fall into.

The first thing you have to do on your path to becoming a monster is to leave the Free People’s behind and be prepared to fight for the enemy…I mean our great ruler Sauron.

Leadership Chronicles Part II: Recruitment and Management

Your Kinship is a Football Team

Through my years in football (American) I came to the understanding that you can have the greatest plays in the known universe but that mattered little without the proper players. A football team needs players, and players need coaches and coaches need players. A Kinship is fairly similar to a football team. Without any members, there is no kin, and just like any team, these players need proper management.

“Without you guys I wouldn’t be here,” is what my coach would always say during a bad performance on our part, normally followed by an intense criticism session, and like with many things, he was right. A kinship is one in the same, without members there is no kin. The questions arises then: How do we get members? The answer is far more complicated, and really depends on what you want, and where you want to go and the attitude you want your kin to have.

ScreenShot00041[1]It was just last week that I brought up the issue about the LOTRO Store being advertised in the different loading screens.  Today, our day of “rest” after our weekend vacation I went over to LOTRO Interface to update my plugins and to download any new ones that have been created.  It was here that I saw that someone had done something different on the site.  Something so simple and yet so enterprising that I thought it was worth pointing out to others who might be interested in removing these advertisements from their own client.

lothlorien_overviewA player by the name of Ganzor has put together a collection of files into one .zip file and renamed them so that they match the name of the art that is located in your <LOTRO DIR>\raw\eng\logo directory.  The files that he has used are from Tara Reuping, but I would assume that most digital art would work as long as the files were used to match the files that are currently within the directory.  And while there are some legal issues that could be brought up concerning the distribution of someone else’s artwork if it was done without their consent, I think that the greater solution and the effort that has been made by Ganzor here is fantastic.

imageCall me a noob, call me a casual player, or even call me lazy; it doesn’t matter.  But for the longest time I’ve tank in LOTRO that has primarily “skated by” without doing a lot to improve my effectiveness beyond some preliminary glances at my virtues or traits.  It’s only been in the last few months that I’ve really started paying more attention to these things.  Before then I focused on leveling, then my alts, and then just getting through the epic story.  However, now that I’ve been trying to run more group content I’ve realized that something had to change.

In most cases my ability to tank was not bad, but it wasn’t great.  Sometimes I had no problems holding aggro, but other times it was much more difficult.  At first I evaluated my virtues, and after arranging them some I determined that while the virtues could improve my defenses and my stats, there really were no that could directly increase my aggro-holding capabilities.  I took a closer look at my class traits and felt satisfied with what I had in relation to holding aggro and I was pretty sure that my rotation was well-suited for my playstyle.

Light is a pretty important part of any screenshot you’re going to take. Without it, you cant see! There are several different ways you can affect the lighting in LOTRO. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you use the in-game lighting to your advantage.

Adjusting the Lighting Under Graphics Settings

One of the easiest ways to adjust the overall lighting of the game is to boost either the ambient light or the brightness under the graphics settings. Increasing the ambient light means that the light coming from all sources such as lamps, the sky, and personal light, are increased. Increasing brightness is similar, however as you slide the brightness up or down the lighting is adjusted evenly throughout the scene. If the brightness is turned all the way up, it will create a snow-haze effect on the screen.

Perspective is a very important aspect of anything visual – from photographs to sketches – because it is how we see and interpret things every day.  And there are a lot of different components that go into photographs or screenshots to make them more or less appealing.

Framing Your Subject

A nice trick to bring emphasis to your subject is to “frame” it.  Typically that involves using existing items in the scene to set up a “frame” around your subject.
