Greetings Reader[s].

Once again I bring you the further adventures of Jonthon, Man-Captain on Landroval. Today I recorded him going through the skirmish. This one is a bit more straightforward for me, and it is easier to locate the encounter mobs. The final fight is a bit tougher than the due to it being against an Elite, but it is doable for me.

Without much further ado, here is the 2 part recording of the skirmish:

You might wonder why this blog is called “Tales From The Great Barrow”.

First of all, it’s obviously stolen from Tales from the Crypt, and the Great Barrows is kind of a crypt. But more importantly the Great Barrows was where i fully realized what LOTRO is all about. GB is the first time in the game where you really need a fellowship, before that I did everything solo, trying to level up as fast as possible. But playing in a fellowship for the first time made me realize that is what makes this game so awesome. It was a PUG, but it didn’t really matter, it really changed everything. I had been in fellowships before GB, but that was just to help someone, or get some help myself. This was the first time in a fellowship where you needed real teamwork.

I still do most my playing solo. But it’s the times when you’re in a fellowship or raid that you’ll remember. You don’t remember killing hundreds of animals to get a deed, or running around the map like crazy for a exploration deed. I can’t even remember most of the epic quest line. What i do remember is things like GB, Grand Stairs, Sword Halls and taking down that enormous, ugly turtle!

Map to the Flowers of the Old Forest

This site gets a lot of searches related to the Old Forest flower deed. Nowadays you kids have it easy. Back when I had to first worry about this, I had to run around with 2 wolves, 3  bats, a bear, several spiders and some evil trees on my tail.  We didn’t even have a detailed map! But I digress …

I thought it would be helpful to put together a map of the flower locations (Nedorlas, Braiglad, Lenhwest, Silloth, Merillif, Dorollin, Cordofoneth, Rhosthon). I didn’t bother with coordinates, as I think this is easy enough. I’ve labeled by name, which should be helpful for those of you with a few flowers leftover.

What a wonderful class!

Ok, so I’ve tried every class in LOTRO except burg, and with my Hunter now at 65, I had to choose wich alt to level up.

Not an easy decision, but one that had to be made. I finally picked my Captain (at level 28 at the time). The Captain is an awesome class to play. Solo play is great fun, and quite easy as long as you don’t start hitting the red mobs. In a fellowship you are extremely adaptable, being able to both tank and heal, or just DPS.

I have now hit 38, and I’m taking a break from levelling to complete som low-level-area deeds. I’ve already finished up everything i Bree-land, almost everything in the Shire, and am now working on the deeds in Ered Luin. After that, I’ll go through the lone Lands and North Downs finishing deeds before I resume the hunt for 65.

Building Middle-earth: Bree-land

Whilst The Shire remains the most instantly recognisable location in Tolkien’s legendarium, it can be argued that three of the best loved locations of The Lord of the Rings are found in the neighbouring Bree-land.  The Old Forest, the Barrow-downs and Bree itself are the main locations which see the Hobbits flee from The Shire and begin their great adventure.  The chapters which detail the journey from Crickhollow to the Prancing Pony, The Old Forest, In the House of Tom Bombadil, Fog on the Barrow-downs and At the Sign of the Prancing Pony are often cited as fans favourites, mine included.  The appeal of reading about the seemingly helpless Hobbits blundering around from peril to deadly peril, with little or no help, and bearing the One Ring, makes for fascinating reading.

Much of the journey through the Bree-land is commonly excluded from adaptations of The Lord of the Rings.  The films by Peter Jackson and Ralph Bakshi, as well as the 1981 BBC Radio adaptation, move straight from The Shire to Bree itself, missing out entirely the adventures in the Old Forest and the Barrow-downs.  Additionally one of the most important, and best loved, characters of The Lord of the Rings, Tom Bombadil, has not been included in any of the major adaptations.  For this reason, many players of LotRO who are unfamiliar with the books will experience these locations and characters for the first time in-game.

I love the Great Barrow, even though I’ve only been in it a handful of times.

My initial exposure to it was way later than it should have been. My Champ was incredibly behind on his books and hit the area in his 40s. For comparison’s sake, the Great Barrow is meant for people in their 20s. I had already completed the first main quest here, which is topped off by an awesome appearance by Tom Bombadil. Sure, he kind of steals your thunder in some ways, but you get to come back on your own and see even more later on.

At my level I could solo most of the Great Barrow quests, but taking on the bosses is still a challenge. I wound up joining a few lower level players to get through it. I know sometimes people wonder why a high level character is running around in some of these places, but Books, Reputation points (particularly if you don’t want to grind for items or hit the Auction House) and Deeds sometimes necessitate it. It’s not just to walk friends through places to save them time.
