Orion is continuing his proposed changes for the Minstrel class and today has a nice summary post of what he suspects will be on the test servers for us to try out first. We have covered the past blog posts by Orion concerning the minstrels here and here in case you’ve missed those. I really think that Orion’s post is pretty clear (if not long) read so I do encourage interested folks to read it.

For my post, I will be focus on changes from the first proposed listings. Orion has taken a lot of the minstrel feedback to heart and has altered the original design to the good ideas from the community. You know what this means. If the changes suck, it’s our fault! (I’m joking save your hate mail). I will be a little out of order from Orions post because I need to spell this out in the fashion my brain can process.

A second blog post covering proposed minstrel changes has been posted by Orion late Friday night followed by a third blog post on Sunday. These posts focuses on traits & trait sets, legacies and ballads.

There’s not much to sum up here as the majority of the post is the listing of traits and trait sets and what they do but I will list them here as well and also add the current trait set for easy comparison. Orion was kind enough to add the comparisons to his update 3 post.

04_monster_playKelsen released a number of proposed changes to the Creep classes they are thinking about implementing with the upding Rise of Isengard expansion in the official Creeps forums.  And while they are fairly well planned he reminds us that, “… these are just ideas- nothing [is] set in stone.”  SO if there are changes you don’t like, that don’t do enough, or are right on the money you can provide feedback straight to Kelsen himself.

There are several ways to provide feedback so far, you can either post a comment on each of the official forum threads or by commenting on his my.lotro page as each list is actually a different blog post.  I strongly urge for you to actually verbally reply rather than rating his blog posts as others seem to have done, since there is no way to garner any real feedback by someone just rating the changes a score of 1-5 rings.

Tim “Raskolnikov” Lang has a new dev diary out today about the changes they are making to the character panel. I don’t know about you but I really enjoy Tim’s dev diaries. They seem to really include how they came to the conclusion that they did and all the plans (even ones that didn’t work).

The goal of the character panel revamp is really simplify the look so it didn’t look so busy and pretty daunting for new players. In the current character panel everything from equipment, to skills, to mounts and housing is all lumped together in one screen.  I suppose that’s very handy if you know where everything is but pretty nuts if you’re trying to figure things out.

The Missing Reagent from Dynamic Layering

mixingDynamic layering is a new technology rolled out in the last patch.  It addresses a very real and concrete problem – server load and client side lag.

By dividing up each zone into multiple instance subzones, presumably it is an easier set of problems to deal with. The side effect is that it has fragmented the communities that once walked the virtual streets of places like Bree.  I had the opportunity to witness this first hand at our recent Ales and Tales, which drew around 100 players to Combe.  Early on, it was apparent that many were not in the “party layer” and we went around yanking them in via fellowship invites with much coordination going on via /regional.

warning-challengesIts been a very challenging launch with the latest Book 2 update.  There are many threads in the forums pointing out this or that problem.  I thought I’d summarize it all here with what has changed since Monday:

  1. Turbine screwed up the community site pretty badly
  2. The game has a new look
  3. Dynamic layering has made casual RP more difficult
  4. We’ve had a huge spike in population
  5. The store is here to suck your bucks.
  6. Instance join has eroded world immersion
  7. New blood doesn’t know the rules

LOTRO Community Site - HomeSeptember 8th was the day that Turbine took down their web sites to unveil their brand new lotro.com and community pages. I for one was excited. I was eager to see what sort of new features and options we’d have with the new community site.

Unfortunately the great unveiling didn’t go as smoothly as everyone would like. The sites were giving error pages, slow to open, blogs were empty or formatted goofy, permissions were messed up and profiles were all kinds of goofy. It had people annoyed, frustrated and even angry over the poor transfer to the live sites. However I’ve been able to notice improvements such as the site working much smoother and search results actually opening working pages which wasn’t happening for me earlier.

The Developer Diary: Volume III: Book 1 Skill Upgrades was posted on the official LOTRO Website. The news of new skills brings mixed feelings to some classes and a smile to others.

One class with a big smile right now is the Hunter class.  And here’s the reason:
