In the latest book update, Turbine made some changes to the levels of resistance that mobs have. They seem to think that a 10% miss chance is perfectly acceptable before resistance reduction stats and legacies are taken into account. I don’t necessarily disagree if we are able to make up the difference with gear and maybe virtues or traits. However, I’m not sure that is quite possible.
The LM community on the official NA forums are rather perturbed by the fact that Turbine really gave us no warning about this and seemed to be unaware of the “resistance bug” for ~2 months (the bug being that resistances were much lower than they had intended). I would think some very simple combat parsing would have shown this problem immediately. I truly wish the LOTRO community had more tools at their disposal for judging DPS, misses, resistances, and various other variables. If so, it would have been obvious at least to us even if the developers were out picking wildflowers.

Today Turbine posted a Developer Diary about the Siege of Mirkwood combat changes. It’s only a couple of pages long, so I suggest you read the whole thing. The original writer was nice enough to break some things down to bulletpoints for us, though:

With Siege of Mirkwood due to go Live on December 1, 2009 – Turbine developers for Lord of the Rings Online have released a new developers diary outlining changes to the combat system.
Turbine is making some pretty big changes in the combat mechanics side of the game, these changes will likely speed up the combat pace (which some people seem to think is ‘slow’). I am not quite sure how I feel about these changes, I will actually have to play with the changes in place to make a determination. I am a bit worried from reading the dev diary though – the changes coming will impact game play quite a bit.

2 High Road is starting an interesting experiment using a third party program to parse the combat data in LOTRO. There's
a preliminary post up now outlining what exactly this program does, and some of the limitations. If you're at all interested in min/maxing your characters, do check out this post and the follow up ones as he continues to look at damage output, etc. I know that one lacking area in the LOTRO Blogosphere is "hardcore" analysis and theorycrafting.

I read
a thread on the Captain forums talking about strategies and merits of using the
Relentless Attack legacy. This legacy increases our critical rating for the Relentless Attack buff. Some argue that this legacy is one of the most useless because the returns hardly make a difference at all. Others will level this legacy only a little bit, saving their points for what they consider more useful legacies. I think the return on investment (ROI) argument is a little fallacious.
Every legacy operates on very small percentages. 12% increase is the highest I've seen for a fully upgraded legacy, and that was on a level 60 first age weapon. 12% to 100 is only 112, not a big difference at all. It doesn't matter what number you use as your "principle" either because the effects are already balanced for not being overpowered (generally), regardless of the numerical value. That means legacies cannot give too much of a bonus, or the skill would become unbalanced. So, if one does argue the ROI isn't worth it, you have to carry that argument to
all legacies.

The resident community manager over at LOTRO, Patience has to live up to her name on a daily, hourly, moment by moment basis. An unforgiving job and one which I don't think I could ever accomplish with as much enthusiasm as her.
ZAM.com has
an interview with her from the recent
LOGIN Conference in Seattle, WA (Hey, that's home!). Anyhow, some nice talk about all three Turbine games, but I'd like to bring up a couple things said regarding LOTRO:
"We're working on making MyLOTRO, the new social network we created, much more connected to the outside world, so you can hook up your MyLOTRO page with, say, Twitter, and tweet whenever your character levels or you post a new blog entry."

There's a
great official guide up on the
main site about Fellowship Maneuvers, also called Conjunctions. I'll leave it to the article to tell you what these are and how they work if you don't know already. I will say that some of the best moments in group combat has been when our fellowship pulled off the harder full Fellowship Maneuvers, such as Wrath of the Oathbreakers. In that, each person has to hit a different color in the right order. Getting 6 people to do that in the middle of hectic combat is a challenge, but the pay off in both in-game effect and personal satisfaction is great. This mechanic is one of my favorite parts of the combat in this game. It's a wonderful group building exercise.

There are a few times in LOTRO where I'm just amazed by the visuals. Most of the time that's the landscape but every once and a while there's some effects that really get my blood pumping. One of them is the Grims, first seen in Forochel and now later fire versions in Moria. The latter has a really cool looking
special attack.
Sorry about the UI showing up in this pic. I didn't have time to shut it off and hit the screenshot button in the middle of my combat skill rotation. Not that it would matter much if I did miss my timing, but the effect is fairly quick and I needed to be fast on the print screen key.

Well, this is looking like a regular post. I did an update to my personal LOTRO gaming last Thursday and it just so happens that I'm updating again on Thursday. Maybe I'll make it a regular Thursday feature, maybe not. Most likely I'll just post interesting things that I did in-game the day after it happens.
So yesterday I logged in finding myself at the Orc-Watch in the
Redhorn Lodes. I looked around at my quests and decided I didn't want to do any of those. I'm feeling a little burned on Moria, so, taking my own advice, I decided to change up my activities. Instead, I went out to the
Misty Mountains intending on clearing out the rest of the
Goblin Town quests plus one
quest to kill the Thunder Lord giant.
I did this giant quest first, barely able to solo the guy, who was an Elite Master. I managed to only take on one other giant while I was killing him and I didn't need to fire either Last Stand or Strength of Morale. It felt good to accomplish this.

This will probably be the last post talking directly about the Book 7 patch notes. I think I've pretty much covered the major issues/changes. I'm certainly not the only one talking about the Book 7 patch. You can find coverage at
Under the Banner,
MMeOw,
LOTRO Chronicles, and
LOTROCast. With that said, here are my final thoughts regarding the notes:
