logoBurgzergarcade.com will be hosting an interview with Turbine Content Designer Paul Simon this coming Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 5:00 PM EST. Paul will be discussing items focused around past projects and his daily work flow (present and future items are understandably not up for discussion). Burgzergarcade will be asking a “static list of questions” and once those are asked they will be opening up the floor to the live chat so that they can ask their own questions. Additional questions may be asked by posting a comment to the announcement post and they will be used if time permits.

This interview will be aimed at aspiring game developers, however everyone is welcome to come. You can attend by going to Burgzergarcade’s live broadcast page or by using the Justin.tv Android or iPhone app during the interview.

Lauren “Budgeford” Salk is the content developer best known for bringing to life the wonderful new festival events like the Haunted Burrow of Fall and Winter-home during Yule. We were able to send her some questions we had about working at Turbine and the design process that she graciously answered for us. Let’s get right to the questions!

What is it like being the only female developer working on content for LOTRO right now?

ONLY IN IT FOR THE LOOT?

Back on the Stateside forums, a vicious little argument erupted on 17 November over the top-end raid loot in Siege of Mirkwood, namely the armour set dropping from the Dol Guldur instance, and raged for two days until the thread was closed. The title given to the thread by the original poster says it all: “If you value raid loot, Mirkwood is NOT for you...”. Well, we already knew (see previous post!) that DG armour will be a visual disaster, but it seems that it’s going to be distinctly poor in terms of stats as well – some posters felt it will be barely better than the full Watcher set. And to add insult to injury, it turns out to be (oh, the shame!) purple rather than teal.

At the same time – and I’m definitely confused as to the thinking behind this - it seems the new SoM legendary weapons will only come in Second-Age flavours. No First-Agers at all. So will a l.60 First-Ager be better or worse than a l.65 Second-Ager? I would guess worse, but who knows?

Outside LOTRO: European Chat

QuestionsToday WarCry held their second Developer Chat, this time aimed at European players.  Making an appearance this time were Sapience, Jalessa, Raskolnikoy, ZombieColumbus, and Faya.  And although there were quite a few fans in attendance, I’m not sure what the issues were but the chat this time around seemed a bit more disorganized.  First off, it neither started on time, nor did it last that long.  Secondly, there were not as many questions answered (whether it was due to lack of time or questions, I’m not sure).  And thirdly, most of the questions answered were already answered in the first chat.

There were a couple of questions that I hadn’t seen before such as “Why is all the end-game gear purple instead of teal?” (Because it’s not the last set of gear we’ll see in Mirkwood.) and “if PvMP gear will be brought up to par with raiding gear” (the new gear will be brought up to par with the 3-man/6-man gear).  However, most of the other answers were the same that we’ve seen over time or answered “no/not at this time”.  Overall, I think a lot of people were disappointed in the chat, but I’m not sure if it could be helped.  I hadn’t spent much time thinking about a question, but the one I came up with was rather droll.  Honestly, I just want it to be 8+ days from now so I’ll have Mirkwood in my hot little hobbit hands!

John was the first Featured Player on the Turbine Community blog. He is a musician in real life working on a Tolkien inspired project entitled “The Lonely Mountain Band”. He is also a kinship leader of the same name on Landroval. We discuss music, LOTRO and kinships!

A celebration of all things Tolkien Inspired!Festival in the Shire was mentioned in the interview which is a big celebration of all things Tolkien that is taking place next summer in Wales. Fathom is trying to get a group trip organized to attend this festival. So if you’re interested in traveling to the UK with Fathom, keep an eye on their website for updates on that!
