I was tossing up whether to do a Riders of Rohan wishlist post this week or continue with the update 5 instance guides, but I figure that the longer I take on these guides the less relevant they become so into the Pits of Isengard it is…

Given the christmas season and upcoming holidays, this will be my last column for the year. I’ll aim to return to posting in approximately mid-January. I was going to use this post as an opportunity to link some of my past posts for people who might be new to the column, and also solicit some feedback. I hope you’ll also forgive me a little indulgence too, I thought I’d go back through my screenshots and give a bit of a slideshow of my lore-master over the past year or so.

Lore-mastery: Two is the lonliest number

As you should know by now, I really like the lore-master class and I think it’s well designed and very useful in both group and solo situations. Today’s column, however, focuses on one of its weaknesses – lore-masters don’t play particularly well with other lore-masters in tougher group content, especially raids. While most other classes can quite happily stack with each other up to a point, a number of features of the lore-master class mean that it’s almost always less than ideal to take more than one lore-master along for a tough large fellowship instance or raid.

I want to be really clear here that what I’m talking about in this post is tougher large group content. In 3-person instances lore-masters play together wonderfully well, being able to simultaneously fill DPS and healing roles is really nice. Some of the best small group runs I’ve done have been with, like, 2 lore-masters and a hunter – stuff just melts and you’re still really survivable. And in easier large group content, including skirmish raids and Draigoch, there’s no harm in taking along a second or third lore-master – the content will get done, absolute efficiency in class makeup is not required.

Lore-mastery is a weekly column by Psychobabble of Imladris, focussing on lore-master news and end game play.

I was so looking forward to jumping on Bullroarer and trying out the new stuff. I wanted to actually get to play some new end game content, get a bit of an insight into the new gear system, take a look at the new raid and get some early tips on it, have a chance to play with some players from other servers and mix around a bit. So I downloaded the client as soon as it was available, hit the character copy, copied my LM over and waited for the “in progress” message to finish. And I waited. And waited. And waited. And then I went to bed and when I woke up…

I’m sure Doc will be along with a post of his own on this, but as you might have seen the Bullroarer update 5 (Armies of Isengard) patch notes are now up! This looks like an exciting update and I can’t wait to jump on Bullroarer and test it out. In the meantime though, I’ve got a few questions about the update from the lore-master’s perspective

1) How will lore-masters fit into the raid finder?

Well, Draigoch seems to be the topic of the week so I thought I’d chime in with a guide to the fight from a lore-master’s perspective. While my raid group hasn’t managed to get beyond phase 2 yet, mainly because we haven’t really been able to put much time into it with organisational difficulties, I’ve got enough of an impression of the fight from what I’ve seen and reading other guides that I think I can offer some useful tips. This guide will mainly be focussed on preparation and characacter build, because quite frankly the fight itself is pretty boring mechanically. As long as you can follow your DPS group positioning leader and can hit FM buttons correctly, there’s really not much you need to be doing outside of your standard debuff/DPS/spot-heal/power-share role.

A while back, in fact quite a long while back as it was before update 2, I wrote a guide to lore-master LI legacies on the official forum. While the info in there still stacks up fairly well, with Isengard and various patches, there’s been enough changes to the LI system and to class mechanics that I think it’s worth putting together an updated guide to lore-master legacies. And while I’m here, I’ll also cover some of the basic information on when and why to upgrade your LIs, because there’s been some confusion about this on the forums recently.

Lore-mastery: How to do damage as a lore-master

One of the biggest misconceptions about the lore-master class is that they are a ranged tactical nuking class, like a fire mage or archetypical magician in other fantasy games. However, while it’s true that lore-masters can put out fantastic burst tactical damage with some flashy skills, especially in AOE situations, due to the fact that our big tactical damage skills are all gated by fairly significant cooldowns a surprisingly high amount of our sustained DPS actually comes from our melee skills and melee auto-attacks. This post will outline some general DPS tips and rotations and provide some statistics to show why if you are looking to do damage as a lore-master then you should be in melee range unless there is a very good reason not to be.

I won’t go into a detailed discussion of legacies in this post, but I will assume that you have at least the two most important staff legacies for lore-master DPS – + tactical skills damage and –staff strike cooldown (maxed, this reduces it to 5sec). These are critical legacies and any lore-master trying to kill stuff should have them on their staff. I also assume that you have the sword and staff legendary slotted because it’s an absolutely indespensible legendary trait.

Overpower Guardian Guide

Introduction

ScreenShot00002Many Guardians like to tank using a shield, as do I from time to time. It is great fun to see the bosses and mobs hopelessly trying to penetrate your defenses as you jeer and taunt at them. And winning the aggro war with those hunters and champions is its own sweet victory.

But I have found that a Guardian in Overpower can be a very exciting way to play. They have an excellent mix of DPS and survivability. In fact, I would call it the perfect mix for tanking much of the “end-game” content. The fact that they have about 1200 extra morale due to the 5 morale per vitality, as well as having almost full parry and evade means they are much hardier than Champions. And they have a lot more emergency skills for when things do go bad.

Basic DPS Champion Guide

Introduction

I decided to make this guide as a sort of backfill for the 2H Champion Guide and the Champion Defensive DPS Guide . In those guides I sort of ignored the basics in order to reduce the size and focus on the issue at hand. This will cover all the things I skipped.

The Champions role is melee DPS, both Area of Effect (AOE) and Single Target (ST). This guide will focus on that role, for that reason I will focus on the Fervour stance. I will, however, discuss Fervour tanking a little though, since you will be required to tank in three-man instances and some 6 man instances, if you desire.
