Ken “Graalx2” Burd released the Guardian Developer Diary for the Rise of Isengard expansion today, and I have to say I enjoy most of the changes. As someone whose “main” character is a Guardian, I’ve been eager to see what changes would make it in comparison to their previous announcement earlier this year.
Overall, Ken believes that Guardians are in a “good place” right now and I’d tend to agree. I think Guardians are a good, solid class that do well as tanks. However, when it comes to DPS I would like to see them bumped up a little. This is not so that they can compete necessarily with Hunters, Champions and Rune-keepers, but instead offer them as a viable DPS fill-in when more than one tanking class joins a group.

Today Orion posted what Graalx2 has been working on with Guardians in Isengard. The main reason for the delay seems to have been that Graalx2 wanted to get the stat changes posted first; that way he’d have more of a foundation for the changes we were seeing with the Guardian class. I would have to agree with him since some of the changes that he made fall pretty much in line with the stat changes that we talked about yesterday.

Mind you these follow the same normal caveats as all the other classes, but Orion posted Graalx2’s proposed changes for Guardians this morning.
I’m not going to go into specifics as honestly I don’t know the class well enough, but a couple things jumped out at me.
- With the stat caps going away, they really wanted to focus on tanking. It sounds as though without high mitigations you’ll get pounded by bosses with Finesse.
- Quite a few skill tweaks, but honestly it seems more like tweaking then a revamp like some other classes have seen. Again though this could be more a function of the stat changes impacting them more then others, or the class being generally solid already.
- Tanking in Overpower stance won’t be discouraged assuming you can take the pounding.
One last point he makes is that he realizes Champs are getting a significant boost to their tanking and understands the concerns that might pose for Guardians (and Wardens). This is something the team is going to closely monitor so hopefully we’ll all have place unlike the Moria days of Champs being the hands-down best tanks.

Introduction
Many Guardians like to tank using a shield, as do I from time to time. It is great fun to see the bosses and mobs hopelessly trying to penetrate your defenses as you jeer and taunt at them. And winning the aggro war with those hunters and champions is its own sweet victory.
But I have found that a Guardian in Overpower can be a very exciting way to play. They have an excellent mix of DPS and survivability. In fact, I would call it the perfect mix for tanking much of the “end-game” content. The fact that they have about 1200 extra morale due to the 5 morale per vitality, as well as having almost full parry and evade means they are much hardier than Champions. And they have a lot more emergency skills for when things do go bad.

During Shadows of Angmar (SOA), Tank classes had proportionally higher survivability over other classes/stances than they do now. There was no limit on common mitigation from armor. There were no caps on Block, Parry, and Evade. There was no cap on Melee Defense, and everything was percentage based, with no ratings. This meant shield equipped Tanks (Guardians mostly) usually took very little damage. It was common to see Guardians with 60-65% total Block, Parry, and Evade (BPE). From time to time they could take almost no damage due to BPE or mitigation buffs.
By contrast, Damage-Per-Second (DPS) classes or stances were very squishy as they could not even approach those numbers. Classes like Hunters and Burglars had medium armor and would not generally have very high BPE. And then Champions, who did have heavy armor and the common mitigation that entailed, lost all BPE when in their DPS stance.

Recently I have received emails from Stratus of Crickhollow and Senseye of Evernight requesting some more information for Guardians I have chosen to answer them here. First there is a guide on the lorebook that is very involved you can find it here. Second as to virtues there are two very good resources the virtue finder at Mmorsel.com and the virtues tab at burgzerg.com. I have only used the one at burgzerg myself but try them out and see what you think.

Call me a noob, call me a casual player, or even call me lazy; it doesn’t matter. But for the longest time I’ve tank in LOTRO that has primarily “skated by” without doing a lot to improve my effectiveness beyond some preliminary glances at my virtues or traits. It’s only been in the last few months that I’ve really started paying more attention to these things. Before then I focused on leveling, then my alts, and then just getting through the epic story. However, now that I’ve been trying to run more group content I’ve realized that something had to change.
In most cases my ability to tank was not bad, but it wasn’t great. Sometimes I had no problems holding aggro, but other times it was much more difficult. At first I evaluated my virtues, and after arranging them some I determined that while the virtues could improve my defenses and my stats, there really were no that could directly increase my aggro-holding capabilities. I took a closer look at my class traits and felt satisfied with what I had in relation to holding aggro and I was pretty sure that my rotation was well-suited for my playstyle.
