Following Codemaster’s change to the their hacked account policy and their own Character Undelete service, Turbine has announced a change to their Reimbursement Policy in regards to Compromised Accounts. Starting February 24th, Turbine will now be including items in their restorations of accounts that have been compromised. This service is only available for accounts hacked from this date forward. Other important things to note include:
- Players must submit an in-game ticket for each affected character within 7 days of their account being compromised.
- If in-game tickets cannot be created you must submit a help request containing the character names and associated world via support.turbine.com within 7 days of your account being compromised.
- Character progress between the time of the compromise and the reimbursement will not be affected.

Last week Sincilbanks had posted on the Codemasters Community Blog about their new stance on restoring hacked accounts and today Codemasters has announced that The Hacked Account Restart Programme (or as I’m calling it, H.A.R.P.) has officially launched. The program is designed to “…help restore character data lost as a result of a hacked account.” Of course this is not without some restrictions. In order to be eligible for the program, players must meet the following requirements:
- The player must be eligible for support (able to raise a ticket in-game) from Codemasters Online to apply for the programme
- The GMs must be able to verify that the claimant is the actual owner of the account
- If the GM cannot verify the account has been hacked then no action will be taken on the account

We received the following email from a listener who wanted to discuss his experiences with kin-members having their accounts hacked, his thoughts on Turbine’s response, and his curiosity about where the issues with security may lie. Please note that all quoted text is from the player and we will be responding in turn.
Hi guys,
I thought I would write to you about what I see as a very serious issue. There seems to be an increasing amount of account hacking going on recently in LOTRO. While this is only based on forum discussions rather than any factual numbers, the rate of people posting about it seems to be on the rise. Recently my kin had two members have their accounts hacked only a few weeks apart. This is after playing since the game went live without a single kin member getting hacked. The increase seems to have really taken off over the past few months.

Sincilbanks posted on the Codemasters Community Team Blog, May Contain Gamers, about the new Hacked Account Restart Programme. The original policy consisted of no reimbursements for hacked accounts.
In many respects the policy reflected a very common approach to IT infrastructure support: If it’s a problem outside of our support scope (in this case that Codemasters Online isn’t responsible for the security of an account) then it’s not our responsibility to resolve, we’re sorry for your problems and we sympathise, but there it is.

In this episode of CStM, we talk about: Merric’s first attempt at playing Goldenstar’s minstrel. Merric is closer to getting his remaining alts to level 20. We are both level 61 and inching closer to level cap! We have also have purchased PAX East tickets so we will be down in Boston this March!
We have an interview with the two new bloggers to our team, Azz and Veneration. We ask them about their MMO experience, what they enjoy in LOTRO and what got them into blogging. Get to know these two as they are now part of the CStM family!

Posted today by Sapience is a warning to “Protect Your Account”. There are have been more news about gaming accounts being hacked lately and Turbine is urging you to take steps to keep your account yours.
The warning serves to all your games as these attacks aren’t focusing on LOTRO but there has been a general rise in game hacks across the industry so you folks playing more than one MMO may want to take steps to protect all your accounts.
