The initial build hit Bullroarer yesterday for Update 10, and we also have some patch notes.  There’s a decent amount in the notes, but also a number of things that are not in the notes, so I’m expecting not only Dev. Diaries to clear things up but also a couple other builds before it goes live.  Here are the notes, but I also wanted to discuss a few items in more detail.

There’s a lot of debate on these new Mithril coins but in all honesty I don’t really care that much.  The biggest thing that bothers me about the whole is that it was the first thing they decided to talk about, really ANOTHER currency added to the game is the most exciting and pressing thing for Update 10?  But this really has very little impact on me since I don’t use those items and it will actually clear up some inventory that I was hoarding from lottery winnings, so there is that bonus.  But I am wondering what’s behind this move and if we’ll see more of this kind of consolidation going forward.

Well, this certainly is an interesting update to the next LOTRO Update that’s posted to Bullroarer.  This is one of those updates that I can honestly say I have no clue what Turbine is thinking.  The actual patch notes are pretty small, but there’s a lot there that they’re not fully explaining.

I’ll start with the good part :)   The new raid gear is in game, and it appears to be the same set bonuses as the previous BG set but with scaled up stats.  I actually really enjoy the look of at least the Warden set, but the fact that it is all Might based, is not going to work for many Wardens.  I wish they would’ve done multiple sets per class like the other recent sets, so this does feel like a bit of a cop out.  I am surprised by the cost (1554 SMs, and 538 Medallions) as I was expecting it to cost Seals like the previous top tier sets.  This does make me believe that there’s another set coming with the raids, which will be nice.

In a developer diary from Graeme Lennon over on mmorpg.com there are some pretty cool details and screenshots of what’s coming down the pipe for The Secret World.  It is a good combination of details and behind the scenes of how the raid itself was created.

I’ve been playing around and trying out all the new toys we’ve gotten with both Update 6 and the first patch for update 6 and I am overall VERY happy with the class and how it plays.

To do a little re-cap, if you’re wondering what’s supposed to be fixed with that first patch Orion summed it up pretty well on the forums.  I think the only remaining major item is the bug with the Terrible Visage trait which puts us in threat easy-mode.  The other issue that I haven’t fully checked out is with our stun immunity, some believe it should prevent knock-downs, but lots of time in the Roots of Fangorn instance is showing otherwise.  I seem to remember something regarding this but can’t find anything nor remember either way.

For those trying to catch up on what all the new gambits do, a new Gambit Chart has surfaced on the forums and it does a good job of showing the new order of achievement and how things change in Assailment particularly.  Another good forum resource is Asto’s Gambit Compendium with good descriptions of each gambit in each stance.  Finally if you’re trying to figure out what the deal is with all the legacy’s, there’s a good forum post for that as well.  There’s also some other good links in the post I made previously.

First of all I’m going to start this article off with a quote: “Hmmmmmmmm.” Now, that’s not a particularly interesting quote on its own but the fact that it was said by the Turbine dev Graalx2 in response to a complaint about the lore-master’s ranged slot item (which was promised in November 2010) does make it fairly interesting. I’ve got no idea what it’s going to be, but I’m certainly looking forward to it and hope that it makes it into Update 6!

Anyway, I’m concluding my series of Update 5 instance guides this week with an overview of The Foundry, a 6-person instance centered around Sauraman’s Ring Forge. I’ll look at doing some guides on various Tower of Orthanc wings in the coming weeks, too. As with the previous guides, these are written mainly from a lore-master’s perspective but also give a general overview of the tactics of the instance. For reference, here’s links to the previous guides:

I was tossing up whether to do a Riders of Rohan wishlist post this week or continue with the update 5 instance guides, but I figure that the longer I take on these guides the less relevant they become so into the Pits of Isengard it is…

Luckily for me, unlike Doc I have had the chance over the past few weeks to play through all of the new instances and 3/6 wings of the new raid. I thought I’d jot down some quick impressions and give people an opportunity to post their reviews and thoughts on the Update 5 group content.

Overall I have to say that I’m extremely impressed. This is a content update that seems at least equal to the excellent In Your Absence cluster that was released last year. The first thing that stands out is the excellent visual design of the spaces. Imo you’d be hard pressed to fault these instances from a visual perspective, the landscapes and dungeons are interesting, varied, fit well with the lore and the real space that they exist in and are just fun to look at. I particularly love how the raid begins outside the Tower of Orthanc and then you head into the various wings – being able to see the building that houses the raid really adds to the immersion factor and is a really nice touch.

The three 3-person instances are all quite varied and I enjoy the various tricks and gimmicks in them. Some people have complained about the frogger in Fangorn’s edge or the punting in the Pits, but both are very manageable mechanics with a bit of awareness and positioning. The T2 fire troll trash in the pits can get pretty brutal, but once you figure out the positioning it’s quite doable. Of the three, I think Dargnákh Unleashed is the weakest. While the first few areas and particularly the first boss fight are quite fun, the final fight is a bit of a joke. There’s literally no DPS element to the fight so if you’re a pure DPS class you have absolutely nothing to do in the fight. It’s purely a healing/tanking check, and while that’s fun to have, surely they could have put some sort of DPS element in there. The difficulty level of these instances is pitched pretty well I think. T1s are all easily puggable and very flexible on class makeup (perfect for instance finder). T2 is tougher and for a smooth run you’ll pretty much want a proper tank (including champ) and healer (including captain), but people can challenge themselves with some success with more varied groups.

I thought it might be interesting to put up a post for people to share their early experiences with the instance finder. While still in an early iteration, the IF is a pretty big change to the game and could have a big impact on how people play the game.

Personally I usually run groups with kin or friends, but have hit up the IF a few times in the past week when others were busy. My experiences have been generally positive, getting fairly quick 3-person groups three times, all 3 for fangorn strangely enough. Two of those groups cleared T1 while the other failed T2. I felt that group composition was reasonable, though as a lore-master I’m lucky to have some flexibility in retraiting for different roles. The failing T2 group was me a cappy and Hunter which might have been workable but just couldn’t get the tanking happening.

Personally I really like the concept of the tool but strongly suspect that it won’t really have its full impact until it becomes cross server. I also think people shouldn’t expect to be able to do T2c fears with the IF. T1 is designed for pug groups for a reason – keep T2 for groups you trust!
