The holiday season is upon us and last year our gift list posts were very well received so we thought we’d do it again this year and share some ideas for gifts to give The Lord of the Rings fan in your life. Some are amazing (and perhaps expensive), some are silly but all are fun!

For Fun

SauronCookieJarSauron Head Cookie Jar (UK Only): £65.00
Presumably for the LOTR lover on a diet. I would have to be pretty hungry for cookies to go near it!

We could only find it on the UK Amazon store which is a bummer as it is pretty darn impressive looking! You guys get all the best cookie jars!

Typically we here at CSTM stay far far away from politics and generally other things from real life that seem to strive to destroy fun in the real world we sometimes are forced to live in.

However, this clip from the Colbert Report attempting to explaining the debt crisis with Lord of the Rings characters is simply too good to pass up. Enjoy!

BlogToday we’re turning the tables a bit and instead of just telling you about neat stuff we find, we’re asking for you to share with us!

Do you have a blog about LOTRO, gaming in general, or perhaps about Tolkien and his stories? Do you write LOTR fan-fiction or are an artist with a knack for drawing elves and hobbits?

I wanted to give a quick introduction on why I’m writing this column and my perspective on the Champion class.  Some of you may know me from my Warden posts and blog and might be puzzled by why I’m writing about champions.  Honestly I’ll admit I struggled with the Champion class for a long while, until I realized that Champions and Wardens both fit my playstyle very well.  Check out my initial Champion post on my blog for a further comparison.  These articles will be slanted towards that playstyle but I will also try to keep them broad as well.  I’m not going to try and claim I’m the best Champion out there, but I wanted to try and help people learn about the class.

The playstyle I’m referring to is the arrogant “I’m gonna run into this group and see what happens” kind of attitude.  On the Warden this works rather well with all the self-heals, and on the Champion this works as you can kill things so quickly.  However, having both a tank and healer that I play at max level, doing this much damage can cause problems for grouping.  Early on, the worst thing that happens is you’ll die, which I’ll admit I’ve done my fair share of.  However, in groups, this can be very annoying so I’m going to offer my suggestions on how to best balance your DPS.  I’m not going to cover this quite yet, but don’t worry that’s something I will get to.  If you’re a DPS class (Champion, Hunter, Runekeeper, etc.) while soloing you certainly can go all out, but when in groups you really need to be careful and toe that line.

Following the Fellowship

Lunna’s videos have been featured before here on LotRO Reporter. Her videos following the Fellowship deserve even more of a mention. They’re a well-done re-creation of the path the Fellowship took from The Shire all the way to Mordor. The most recent is part 3 “Into Khazad-Dum“. It follows the path of the Fellowship out of Rivendell and into Moria. The video includes Gimli’s tale of “Durin’s Awakening” set to music by the Lonely Mountain Band.

Lunna’s ability to capture Middle-earth is amazing. As you watch it, you almost forget for a moment you are looking at video game graphics. Instead, the books seem to come to life thanks to her virtual eye for the landscapes and music set behind each video. To watch all three videos, check Lunna’s YouTube channel.

LotRO’s free to play is launching September 10th. Beta participants, current and past subscribers will be getting a headstart on September 8th. For the time being, there is a noticeable lull in LotRO. Players are taking a little break in anticipation of new content and changes coming. Some are wandering around bored with nothing to do in their favorite game.

Here are 5 things you can do while you wait for free to play to launch.
