Bree Bree is a very important city in LOTRO. Its the first major city all the players see. It’s the main questing location that each race is eventually herded to. Not only that but Bree is very iconic in terms of the story holding the Prancing Pony for example.

Merric and my latest project is leveling up a hunter/runekeeper combo and being in the mid-twenties, Bree is my main hub for city type amenities like banks, bards, and auction houses. Lately, I’ve really disliked doing business in Bree and the main reason is that it is very inconvenient to the visitor.

A Map to The Flowers of the Old Forest

Shortly before closing down MMeOw, I put together my own map to the Flowers of the Old Forest deed. There are a few of these floating around, but I went ahead with it anyway. For those not familiar, this deed requires you to find several flowers scattered throughout the Old Forest. Doing quests in the Old Forest, you’ll likely run across a few of these. Finding the rest isn’t exactly a cup of tea, unfortunately, as many are in areas you really don’t have any need to visit.

The map below gives the locations and names of all of the flowers you need to find: Nedorlas, Braiglad, Lenhwest, Silloth, Merillif, Dorollin, Cordofoneth and Rhosthon. I didn’t bother with coordinates, as I think this is easy enough. If you have trouble finding one, you can press “Delete” on your keyboard to select usable that is nearest item to your character.

Map to the Flowers of the Old Forest

This site gets a lot of searches related to the Old Forest flower deed. Nowadays you kids have it easy. Back when I had to first worry about this, I had to run around with 2 wolves, 3  bats, a bear, several spiders and some evil trees on my tail.  We didn’t even have a detailed map! But I digress …

I thought it would be helpful to put together a map of the flower locations (Nedorlas, Braiglad, Lenhwest, Silloth, Merillif, Dorollin, Cordofoneth, Rhosthon). I didn’t bother with coordinates, as I think this is easy enough. I’ve labeled by name, which should be helpful for those of you with a few flowers leftover.

New Lorebook?

As we where running around the Misty Mountains last night, I had occasion to open up the in-game Lorebook to look up where we needed to go for one of the Epic Quests. I noticed that there where couple of changes, which will probably make me more likely to use the Lorebook in-game in the future.

The first of these changes is that the Lorebook seems much quicker. In the past, I’ve always found that it was quite slow and cumbersome to use. Now, I’ve found it quite fast. Searching for quest still meant a little hunting. Just typing in the quest name didn’t work for some reason, I had to type a portion of the name, and select “Quest” from the drop down menu that showed up, so you might have to fiddle a little with what you type into the search box.

For those of you who don’t know, the Lorebook is an in-game guide to all things LOTRO. You can search quests, items and skills and get a description. Better than that, for quests, you can get map co-ordinates and sometimes even comments on how to complete the quest. Very helpful. The icon to open the Lorebook is on the mini-map, just bellow the destiny points icon. It looks, well, kind of like an old bearded man. At least it does for me….

I was listening to LOTROCast episode 16 and they talked about a web site that has an amazing interactive map that shows where all the heroes and villains are based on the date. The site is called “The Hunt for the Ring” and it’s definitely worth your time to play with.

There is a LOTRO tie into this as well as it uses in game maps to display some parts. It’s really fascinating and an impressive amount of work. It follows the story to Rivendell and I certainly hope he continues filling it out. It’s exciting to watch the ring inch closer and closer to Rivendell with the Nazgûl right behind.

Okay, here’s a random bit of trivia.  A few weeks ago as I was running around during in-game night-time, I happened to glance up to the sky and saw the Big Dipper!  Imagine my surprise!  However, I was informed that the game sky is actually our true sky, as seen from somewhere in England (wherever it was that Tolkien lived when writing LOTR).  So, I thought that was pretty cool!

After what seemed like several months of relative somnolence, those remarkable artists at The Brasse.com have sprung back into action with another brilliant hand-drawn map, this time of the Waterworks in Moria. Though crammed with information about locations, mobs, allies and items, the Brasse maps have an uncanny ability to make highly complicated terrain look simple and easily navigable; many a baffled player has owed his continued sanity to the Brasse map of the Old Forest. The Waterworks map can be found here; see the link, below, for a full list of all those currently available.

This is a very large (17,000 x 8,500 pixel) composite photomosaic map of East Angmar, from Garth Fornir to Carn Dum and Urugarth inclusive. It is in the form of a 32.5 MB JPEG file; once downloaded, it can be overwritten, printed, viewed onscreen and so forth.

You can download it from this link: http://rapidshare.com/files/140723301/Carn_Dum.jpg. Even if you don't have a Rapidshare account, it can be downloaded for free after a 30-second wait. Personally, I found it very helpful both for navigating and as a way of getting a sense of how the various parts of this very complex area relate to one another. Read the rest of this entry »
