False prophet

In the ancient days of the First Age, when the Sun arose for the first time, the Race of Men awakened and a Voice spoke in their hearts, telling of their making and their purpose in Arda. Men began to explore the world and make words, and they often asked the Voice for help, but the Voice did not answer, so that Men should discover Arda for themselves and become wise. But then a great and beautiful being came among Men and spoke to them of the Darkness, and Men listened to him for he was more forthcoming than the Voice. But they were deceived, for their guest was Morgoth in a fair guise. He filled the dark with fear and caused Men to turn away from the Voice, claiming that it wished to devour them. Morgoth commanded a fane be built in his honour that Men might worship him, and this was done. It is said that all Men then alive bowed at that dark shrine, and though in time most Men came to recognize and reject Morgoth, the Shadow therefore was upon them and all Men who came after them.

Layabout or unexpected hero

When the scent of wood-smoke lingers in the mountain air, the leaves of the trees on the foothills turn to flaming gold, and the days grow crisp and the nights cold, autumn has come once again. It is time for the Dwarves to retreat into the warm, dry sanctuary of their hollow halls beneath the fells, there to enjoy roaring fires and the deep-voiced singing of the minstrels, and to begin the craft-work that will take them through the deeps of winter.

Cruel light of the east-dawn

Second Marshal of the Mark

Théodred was the son of Théoden King and heir to the throne of the Riddermark, the only child of Théoden and Elfhild, who died bearing him. Théoden never took another wife, and thus Théodred was raised alone until Théoden adopted his sister-son and sister-daughter, Éomer and Éowyn — Théodred’s cousins. Théodred was thirteen years older than Éomer, and the younger boy developed a great respect and respect for him that endured into their adult lives. As a man, Théodred was made Second Marshal of the Mark and thus had command of the various éored of the West-mark. His base of operations was at the Hornburg, and this positioned him well to oppose Isengard, the stronghold of the treasonous Saruman the White. Early in IIIA 3019, a full-scale invasion of Rohan by Saruman seemed inevitable, but Théoden King sat in Meduseld in a fey mood, doing nothing to oppose the treachery of the White Wizard. As winter drew to a close, Théodred therefore took the defense of the Westfold into his own hands, fortifying the Fords of Isen, which Saruman must control to invade Rohan from the west.

The challenge of the trumpets of Eönwë

Throughout the ages of Middle-earth, the Elves have fought in many terrible battles. Elves possessed great skill of body, being strong and resilient to harm, and thus were adept warriors; yet they did not love battle and joined it mostly out of necessity in defense of their lands against the Enemy. Though it took a grievous wound, the body of an Elf could be slain in war, and the unhoused spirit of the fallen elf must perforce return to the Halls of Waiting in Valinor. After a time in those silent halls, the spirits of some elves might be rehoused in their body of old, yet these for the most part must remain in Valinor. Thus, though the spirits of slain Elves endure so long as does Arda itself, bodily death was still a sorrowful bereavement for the loved ones of the departed left behind in Middle-earth.

Hawking his wares

In the waning days of the Third Age of Middle-earth, the scattered communities of the Free Peoples were becoming more and more isolated, especially in Eriador, which was only sparsely populated. As the rumours of war in the East grew, few travelled abroad, especially the Hobbits of the Shire and the Men of Bree, who were content within the perceived safety of their own borders. Nevertheless, some news of the wide world did come to the Shire and the Bree-land, and this was often brought by Dwarves, who still made use of the great East Road running from the Blue Mountains in the west to the Misty Mountains in the east.

Daring and dashing

The Took clan was one of the oldest and richest hobbit-families in the Shire. Gentleman farmers, their ancestral hall was the Great Smials of Tuckborough, and the countryside around it was known as the Tookland. They also held the Shire’s only inherited office, that of the Thain, which the Oldbuck family had handed to Isumbras the First some six centuries before the end of the Third Age. The Tooks, while very well-to-do, were considered less respectable than other Hobbit families. This was because they had a reputation for eccentric behaviour, including going off on scandalous adventures. Folktales had it that their adventurous streak was due to one of the Tookish ancestors having taken a fairy bride, but the reality was that Tookish boldness probably stemmed from their significant Fallohide ancestry. In any event, the Tooks were known to be friendly with the wandering conjurer Gandalf the Grey — a most disreputable vagabond.

Fair and noble prince

[With Gandalf] went the Prince of Dol Amroth in his shining mail. For he and his knights still held themselves like lords in whom the race of Númenor ran true. Men that saw them whispered saying: ‘Belike the old tales speak well; there is Elvish blood in the veins of that folk, for the people of Nimrodel dwelt in that land once long ago.’

The Lord of the Rings 5:IV
