Last year I attended Michigan’s Ucon in Ann Arbor for the first time ever. Talbot of Landroval had seen that I had done an article on Games Workshop’s Lord of The Rings miniatures and informed me that he usually hosted a game or two every year at Ucon and said that if I was interested that I should go. Well, I’ve always been interested in miniatures, and even played MechWarrior with a regular group for a while in High School. So I went, played the two games Talbot hosted, and had an absolute blast!

This year, Talbot is hosting three games of LOTR where we will play through the scenarios of:

I have another miniature report to share with you this week. This time it is a complete model of Bag End made by 30 year old Maddie Chambers of Chesterfield, Derbyshire (that’ means she’s in the UK).

Lord of The Rings fan makes miniature Frodo Baggins' home

The model is three-foot square and took her a year to build. As you can tell from the photo, the detail is astounding! I want one! How amazing would it be for Baby Hobbit to have a play Bag End House instead of a plain old doll house?

This it truly just jaw dropping beautiful to to me. Minas Tirith made completely out of matchsticks! The project that took nearly 3 full years was recently completed last month. Built by Patrick Acton the model is built out of 420,000 matchsticks and 24,000 small wooden blocks (who counts this stuff!?). I envy the patience Mr. Acton obviously has!

I encourage you to visit the page on MatchstickMarvels.com to see more pictures and views of this mammoth model.

The start of The Watcher scenario This weekend I went to U-Con to geek out and play The Lord of The Rings Strategy Battle Game with Talbot of Landroval (who has a blog post up concerning the event that you should read as well).  And I have to say that it was a ton of fun!  I felt badly about leaving Goldenstar alone with the baby, but she got a lot done around the house without me there to clutter things up.  I have to say that the scenery was just amazing.  Please note that all the scenery was created from the vision of Talbot; only a few small pieces on each set are actually purchased items; the rest he made and painted by hand.  All the figures were painted by Talbot as well.  He has some really good shots and some shots of the building process on his site.  In fact most people in attendance were so enamored with his sets that they drew quite a crowd as the convention went on.  He will be running these scenarios again at Wintercon on Saturday December 5th, 2009 and I seriously suggest that no matter what your experience level is that you sign up if you have even a little bit of interest.  Eventually he plans to add 2 more scenarios including The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm.

The Whiteboard of Stats Was a Great Idea! Now I went into this game a complete newbie.  I have played a miniature game before back in High School (BattleTech) but it’s been years since I’ve played any miniature game whatsoever.  I had no ideas what the rules were or what we were going to do other than we were going to play out scenarios for The Watcher in the Water and Balin’s Tomb.  However, Talbot anticipated the game having people who had no experience playing miniature games being involved, so he had things set up to make things easy including cards with character stats and abilities for the players to use and a whiteboard with all the important statistics for everyone to see and keep track.  And even though when I first took a look at this board and went “oh man, I’m in trouble” he was able to quickly explain all the stats before each game and by the second game most of us knew what was going on.  It also helped that a couple of players were pretty experienced at miniature games and helped out explaining things to those of us who were new.  At no time did I feel lost or in over my head as Talbot was on-the-ball about how to calculate everything.  However, I think that anyone who sits down with the game is going to have a favorable experience, because it’s a lot of fun.

image I’m not one to normally go to conventions, mostly because I’m not familiar with many of them except for the incredibly large ones which would cost quite a bit of money!  However, when Talbot on Landroval told me about U-Con and how he was going to be running some Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game episodes in Ann Arbor, I decided that this would be a good time to give a local convention a try.  I’m still not familiar with the game itself, but Talbot assures me that no experience is required.  I am trying to get my own personal copy of the rulebook for my own personal use beforehand to go through them, but I’m positive that if I’m not able to that he’ll be well-prepared to do a short introduction.  Most of all though, I’m excited about playing on the scenery that he has created for Moria and The Watcher!  So if any of you are in the area and have Saturday, November 14th free; why not go ahead and register and join us?  It should be a lot of fun!

Unfortunately Goldenstar will not be attending, although she has put in an order for Zingerman’s bread and gelato (if they’re still selling it).  I myself was hoping for a lunch break that would allow me to partake of some sushi, but that’s probably not going to work out.  That’s OK though since I tend to generate quite a high bill whenever I go out for sushi and because those of us there can just go to the food court and talk about LOTRO and the like.  Maybe we’ll even get in a quick game of the CCG that Talbot said he’d show me. We’ll see!

Outside LOTRO: Mithril Games Workshops Miniatures

Most of us were introduced to Tolkien’s world before The Lord of the Rings Online came out in some fashion.  Some of us through the books, others through the animated movies, and others through the live-action movies.  Nevertheless, somehow, someway we all traveled to Middle Earth and were so captivated that we have found a home living in the world through LOTRO.

However, we cannot always spend our time logged into the world that was forged by Tolkien and brought to life by Turbines and our imaginations.  Sometimes computers crash, company calls, or we find ourselves wanting to do something else other than log into a computer and sit there for a while.  Maybe we’d rather do something outside, or spend some time face-to-face with a friend, but we still have that hankering to spend some time in The Prancing Pony or walking through the Breefields.

So begins this series of posts where each week I will highlight some form of Lord of the Rings that can be experienced outside of LOTRO.  Now of course I am not putting these out there as a replacement for LOTRO, but instead a supplement that can be used to take a break, spend some time face-to-face with the family or friends, and basically unplug from the game and do something different.
