Gil-galad was an Elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven’s field
were mirrored in his silver shield.

I was really enjoying taking these screenshots in the Hall of Fire, but as you may know, because of the fire coloured lighting in there, it’s not the best place to show off colours. So forgive me if the details of this robe are not perfectly clear, I will redo another outfit with it in daylight some other time, I just felt that this was the perfect place, for the perfect minstrel outfit, right now.
This robe and shoulders are from the casual-update-5-instance-cluster-minstrel-set (is that a word?). The purple set can be purchased with seals and medallions that drop in relative abundance from the new instances. If you are a casual player like me, it doesn’t take forever to get the set, unlike the raid set which even the raiders are complaining is a very tough grind. I am very happy with my new robe and the shoulders are awesome! I don’t like the fingerless gloves of the set very much, because they make the arms look like two long black spagetti’s.  I replaced them with Dunland bracers.

This instrument is the new Pibgorn that came with Update 5. I found it in my mailbox this afternoon as a present and a surprise from a friend. Thank you Cero!

Minstrels and Captains as Real Life Healers

In the frozen land of Nador they were forced to eat Robin’s  minstrels. And there was much rejoicing.

When I first started playing LOTRO and saw that the primary healers were called “minstrels” and played music to restore health, the first thing I thought was, “That’s stupid.”

After all, it really does seem kind of silly that your healer is standing in the back playing a flute/theorbo/harp/cowbell.  I can accept the idea of the rune-keeper or lore master as healers.  After all, Middle Earth is a fantastical world, and it seemed to me that those two classes draw their power from a kind of magic.  But you can’t tell me that a guy with a lute is going to heal me after a giant steps on me or an orc tries to run me through with its spear.

Lore-mastery: Level 75 non-armour gear

The end-game gear treadmill has started anew, so it’s time to start sitting down and working out what pieces you should be shooting for. I won’t be talking about armour in this post, both because I’ve discussed the raid armour set in a previous post, and because I haven’t yet had the time to work out the best way of mixing and matching set pieces with random drops. I’ll probably do a later post updating this one when I get the chance, but for now I’m focussing on non-armour pieces. Also, while the discussion here is specifically aimed at lore-masters, most of the stat priorities are the same for each of the 3 tactical classes so the gear discussed here should be basically the same as for minstrels and rune-keepers.

There has been quite a bit of change lately with Isengard, and I wanted to put up a post that combined some of that for folks.

First up, for those of you out in Dunland you may have interacted with an NPC Andred out in the Gravenwood.  Personally, I had a horrible time trying to find the last two quests (the set is part of a deed) so I’m sharing the snapshot below to show you where I was standing when I was able to get these last two quests:

This week we discuss the new screenshots, hunter dev diary, changes coming to the LOTRO Store and more!

This week Goldenstar has been playing with her Dums in Angmar. Her burglar is level 45 and working on her class quests and getting her legendary item.

Merric actually joined us in the Dum group this week and got his warden to level 45. He did a few skirmishes and is working on gathering burglar class items for the lazy Goldenstar.

Rise of Isengard has introduced a TON of changes for the class, and Orion isn’t quite done yet.  Although I have to admit this is a great change.  Currently there are a number of changes that have been made to the Minstrel instruments to modify the benefits and make them more useful.

Friday, Orion posted on something he was able to get into the process for the upcoming Update 5 regarding the Minstrel instruments.  He’s been able to change the craftable Tier 7 instruments such that any instrument can have any of the available bonuses leveraging the multi-output recipe feature.  Only the Tier 7 recipes will be changed, the other recipes will function as they do currently.  Here are the buff choices:

  • Ballad and Coda – Damage & Ballad, Cry and Coda -  Power Cost Reduction (Critical Bonus: Threat Reduction)
  • Healing – Critical Bonus & Threat Reduction (Critical Bonus: Anthem – Power Cost Reduction)
  • Healing – Critical Bonus & Healing – Power Cost Reduction (Critical Bonus: Threat Reduction)
  • Healing – Bonus & Ballad and Coda – Damage (Critical Bonus: Threat Reduction)
  • Healing – Power Cost Reduction & Anthem – Power Cost Reduction (Critical Bonus: Threat Reduction)

I made a point to ask Turbine yesterday about videos and received permission to post videos based on our common understanding.  Based on that, I’ve put together a video with commentary of the changes for the Minstrel class.  We’ve seen some great written guides, but I know for some videos are more helpful.  If Bullroarer comes back up, I will probably do another run with the Yellow line to see how that works out but this video focuses mainly on War-speech.  I’ll also try to do some for the Warden changes and possibly the Captain.

I wanted to show this for a couple reasons:
