Welcome to How to be a Monster, this was inspired by the vast majority of LotRO players not taking advantage of a huge part of the game…monster play.  I understand, you tried it already, died several times and vowed never to come back again.  Maybe you went so far as to make the dreaded pinky promise.  Well the goal of this article is to show you both the good and the bad of monster play and hopefully help you mark or even fill in the pits that most players fall into.  I will be doing this by telling you the good and bad experience that I have day by day and a recommendation on how to avoid the “pit” that I, and many others, sometimes will fall into.

The first thing you have to do on your path to becoming a monster is to leave the Free People’s behind and be prepared to fight for the enemy…I mean our great ruler Sauron.

While most people read the announcement of RoR (pronounced RAWR! by me) and thought that it was awesome, I was left with more questions than answers. This is because I recently got added on to CSTM for a PVMP article and have been thinking in PVMP mentality for the last few weeks.  I was going to post my first issue of “How to be a Monster” and then RoR got announced.  After reading from multiple sites, I could not shake away PVMP questions about RoR.  I decided that while the news was still fresh I would write about how this expansion could change PVMP forever.

This weekend, our Game Masters will be back in the Ettenmoors! This time, however, they’re fighting in the name of the Free Peoples! We’ve heard your feedback from last weekend’s events and this weekend’s event will have a few changes. Our GMs will not only be more powerful, but they’ll also be bringing their own backup!

GMs will be appearing randomly across all servers. Please keep in mind they are there for the event and not to address support issues, please direct all support requests through the normal channels.

lotro_isgd_group_nightJared “Kelsen” Pruett has delivered one of the first of apparently several PvMP themed Developer Diaries concerning changes to the system in the Rise of Isengard.  This post specifically focuses on the changes to the Free People’s side (Freeps) and what players can expect once the expansion is released.

First up, there have been some changes in Freep Quests in order “to help remove some of the hurdles involved in PvMP progression…”

Hi everyone! This is Iinferno of Elendilmir (or Don if you’d rather call me that). I’m a huge moors addict, and love writing, so when I stumbled upon CSTM a while back I noticed a distinct lack in moors related content. More recently I wrote CSTM asking if they had need of a new writer and when they let me in I thought this would be a great time to fill in the gap in pvp content.

04_monster_playKelsen released a number of proposed changes to the Creep classes they are thinking about implementing with the upding Rise of Isengard expansion in the official Creeps forums.  And while they are fairly well planned he reminds us that, “… these are just ideas- nothing [is] set in stone.”  SO if there are changes you don’t like, that don’t do enough, or are right on the money you can provide feedback straight to Kelsen himself.

There are several ways to provide feedback so far, you can either post a comment on each of the official forum threads or by commenting on his my.lotro page as each list is actually a different blog post.  I strongly urge for you to actually verbally reply rather than rating his blog posts as others seem to have done, since there is no way to garner any real feedback by someone just rating the changes a score of 1-5 rings.

Dev Diary: Monster Play Changes

77Today saw the release of the Monster Play changes that will be coming in Update 2, Echoes of the Dead.  Jared Pruett was in charge of these changes, which so far seem to be aimed at the rewards that the Free People get and smoothing out the initial experience for Creep-side players.

Starting off with the Free Peoples, Jared states that the most common complaint is that the armour sets are usually not that compelling for most players.  Usually rewards in the Epic Storyline or from running dungeons are usually better.  So in response to this they have created a new kind of runic (I believe this means a Legendary Item Rune) called an Insignia, that is only available within the Ettenmoors.  They are non-slot specific and will “…enable players to utilize PvMP armour skill mods at a much lower probability chance.”  This will be done by allowing the bonuses on armour and insignias to stack. He gives the following example:
