Welcome to How to be a Monster, this was inspired by the vast majority of LotRO players not taking advantage of a huge part of the game…monster play.  I understand, you tried it already, died several times and vowed never to come back again.  Maybe you went so far as to make the dreaded pinky promise.  Well the goal of this article is to show you both the good and the bad of monster play and hopefully help you mark or even fill in the pits that most players fall into.  I will be doing this by telling you the good and bad experience that I have day by day and a recommendation on how to avoid the “pit” that I, and many others, sometimes will fall into.

The first thing you have to do on your path to becoming a monster is to leave the Free People’s behind and be prepared to fight for the enemy…I mean our great ruler Sauron.

So you want to join a kin?  Over the past several weeks, our friend Skyrgrim has posted several articles about leading a kin.  His articles are thoughtful, provocative and have elicited a variety of responses, some positive and some negative.

They have also been aimed at providing insight into what makes an effective leader of a kinship.  I am not cut out to be a leader, although I don’t mind taking a leadership role in some cases.  In this article, I’d like to offer some thoughts on picking the kinship that is right for you, and I’ll talk a little bit about what it takes to be a good kinmate.  As always, your own comments are welcome.

Why do you want to join?

Leadership Chronicles Part II: Recruitment and Management

Your Kinship is a Football Team

Through my years in football (American) I came to the understanding that you can have the greatest plays in the known universe but that mattered little without the proper players. A football team needs players, and players need coaches and coaches need players. A Kinship is fairly similar to a football team. Without any members, there is no kin, and just like any team, these players need proper management.

“Without you guys I wouldn’t be here,” is what my coach would always say during a bad performance on our part, normally followed by an intense criticism session, and like with many things, he was right. A kinship is one in the same, without members there is no kin. The questions arises then: How do we get members? The answer is far more complicated, and really depends on what you want, and where you want to go and the attitude you want your kin to have.

Kinship Drama: Lessons Learned

When I joined my first kinship, my plan was to stick with it and not become one of those people. You know, those kinship hoppers, constantly switching from one kin to the next. Unfortunately, almost against my will, that is what I seem to have become.

I played a few MMO’s pretty casually before LOTRO, but I had never joined a guild. I had read some things and knew they could be cauldrons of drama, prone to shifting personal alliances and breakups. So my plan when I entered LOTRO was to carefully pick a Kinship that I could stay with for a few years.

I spent some time during closed beta reading up on various kinships. Being fairly inexperienced I did not really know what I should be looking for. I am a Christian, so I ended up choosing a Christian Kinship, The Eruhini: The Children of Illuvatar. I figured being in a kinship with like minded people would preclude some of the drama since we should more or less agree on many matters.

Learning How to Monster Play: Classes

Although I am continuing on with my alt project and with the continuous improvement of my Guardian, I’ve decided that there is another aspect of the game that I have ignored far too long; and that’s Monster Play!  For those who may be unfamiliar with the concept, Monster Play is LOTRO’s implementation of Player versus Player (PvP or Player versus Monster Player/PvMP in LOTRO) combat.  It allows players (currently VIP only with a character of level 10 or higher on a server) to assume the roles of the forces of Mordor and battle other players level 40 and above.  Currently there is only one zone in which PvMP is allowed; the Ettenmoors.

MPButtonAs stated before, the first things that you need to join Monster Play is a VIP membership and a level 10 character on the server on which you desire to play a creep.  Leveling to 10 is fairly easy and only takes an hour or two; if that.  After you’ve met these requirements you should then be able to log into Monster Play and create your first creep!

Managing Your Legendary (Item) Inventory

Love it or hate it, I think most LOTRO players would agree that the legendary item system is one of the most confusing in the game. The learning curve on this system is rather steep. You’ll be leveling along happily and then, as early as level 45, your weapon or class item goes from being something with easily understood stats to this thing with lists of “legacies” that modify skills you may not even have yet!

I’m not going to go over all the intricacies of the Legendary Item (LI) system, but I would like to point out a couple things that I learned only recently. If you want a more in-depth explanation of the system, I highly recommend this forum post.

When you’re trying to tell a story or convey a message, there can be a lot of little details to choose between. Here are just a few tips to get you started.

The Language of Emotes

There are a lot of emotes available to players, from a simple grin to a full body motion. When you’re looking to take a screenshot of characters, these can be really helpful in to convey the message.

Part 1 ended with me briefly mentioning and describing the easiest and most basic of conjunctions (also called Fellowship Maneuvers), Flushes (2, 3 and 4 length [additional bonuses and names for 5 and 6 length flushes do not exist]). In this installment I’m going to be covering what I consider to be the intermediate level of conjunctions, Pairs and Full Houses as well as a few of the simpler “unique” fellowship maneuvers.

Are Virtues Worth the Grind?

Recently @Arlequinslotro commented on Twitter that “It seems some folks don’t think VIRTUES are important to level…” As an active raider, I can’t stress enough how much I disagree with that line of thinking. Virtues are extremely important, especially if you have an interest in taking part in endgame instances.

Of course, to begin a discussion on the merits of virtues, one must first understand what they are. Each virtue is a trait that you can equip to your character and has three stats that it modifies. There are 20 virtues in all, ranging from Charity to Empathy, Idealism to Loyalty and Mercy to Zeal. Virtues are obtained in a couple of ways. Most common is by completing deeds, but you can also acquire a racial trait reward by gaining friend status with the reputation faction specific to your race (Elves may only equip the Award of Elven Virtue, Hobbits may only equip the Award of Hobbit Virtue and so on…).
