CNN’s Geek Out blog has a new article out today called “The migratory patterns of MMO gamers”. In the article the author, Nikki Rau-Baker, talks about the pattern of MMO players to leave their game to try another game.
The article speaks on a couple games but LOTRO is a bit more prominent as it is something that the author is familiar with and plays herself.

The other night (this past Tuesday, to be specific), Merric and I briefly discussed the new store armour. Today I decided to compare those to their crafted counterparts and was a little dismayed at what I found.
First off, here are the stats on both crafted armour that can be created from dropped recipes, as well as the store armour.

Let’s face it, the news from Turbine has all but disappeared in the last couple of weeks. I’m sure there is a massive amount of testing, revisions, and bug fixes going on in their offices so I can’t blame them. And of course they are most likely also preparing for upcoming events such as PAX West, Private and Public Beta testing (no, there is no news on this) as well as preparing the release of Dev Diaries and other announcements. But in the meantime we, the players, are left twiddling our thumbs while we refresh our feeds; hoping that we will soon be regaled with some tidbit of news.
But what are you doing now that the Rise of Isengard looms ever closer? Back in December, Kia had several suggestions on how you can prepare for Isengard and today Syp wrote about how he’s starting a Hobbit Burglar in an effort to focus more on the story that LOTRO tells since his two level 65 characters are in good shape for Rise of Isengard. So it got me thinking, what am I doing with Rise of Isengard being just about 2.5 months away? What is everyone else doing? Certainly there are a number of ways “to get ready” for Isengard, but it’s impossible for me to think of them all. Of course it’s entirely possible that you may not be doing anything at all and the game will continue for you as norm.

I’ve seen many posts bemoaning the lack of RP flag with Landroval. I’ve even seen some players encouraging Landroval RP community to leave en masse to Laurelin in order to take advantage of the RP enforcement there. I haven’t seen much about why a Roleplay Encouraged flag is actually better than a RP Enforced flag.

Now that I have had a few weeks to digest the new content from Update 2, I feel comfortable in voicing my opinions on this update. I believe this is one of the better releases for LOTRO in quite some time.
The biggest change which I really appreciated was the LI system revamp. The new legacy scroll retrieval system is wonderful. At long last I can build LI’s to be good at the skills I like to use. It takes a good bit of work to level some LI’s to 30 to get the Legacy you want, and it takes a lot of Empowerment scrolls to max them out; but the reward is worth the effort.
A side benefit of this is the increase in value of third age LI’s. Up to now they have mostly been trash. You might sell them on the AH for 100 silver or decon them for a tier 1 relic. Only if it happened to have 3 or 4 good legacies for a class would it be worth a few gold. Now any LI is worth more. Only 1 legacy can be obtained on a decon so if it has at least one major that is considered good it will be desirable. But players also want minor legacies, which are a little harder to get since you have to get lucky on the reforges. This makes all LI’s valuable.

This article was originally put together back in August when we had the idea of a Girl Gamer Roundtable. We still have plans for a roundtable but see no reason to keep this held back any longer. Thank you again to the ladies (and gentlemen) willing to answer our questions!
According to ESA, current proportion of female gamers is about 42% of the total players of online game. Surprising? Maybe not, considering the general tendencies of video games to diversify their products so it may reach a broader public. Of course, this statistic also includes all kind of puzzle, arcade and family games; mmos only represent 14% of the total online gaming activity. The number is still unveiling an undeniable truth: Girl gamers are becoming more and more frequent in the virtual world.
However, stereotypes are strong, and most people still have this vision of the gaming industry being a men only compound. So my question is how, as a girl, does it affect your game to play in an environment perceived to be largely dominated by men? What problems can it generate and what to do to avoid them?

Recent game updates and store deals have revived the not-so-old question of whether or not reputation deeds should be in the store and what to expect from store exclusive mounts. So here are my thoughts on the matter.
First of all, my opinion is that horses are mainly functional cosmetic items. Since we don’t yet have mounted combat, you can’t fight from horseback, and although some mounts have higher morale, speed and critical defenses, generally speaking, whether you ride a festival horse or a reputation pony isn’t going to save your character from defeat.

Something big is brewing over in Turbine headquarters and they’re being a bit of a tease about the entire ordeal. All we know is the news is big and they’re not telling us about it until tomorrow.
Want to know my guess? Really it’s something you’ll never forget. The Beatles are coming to Middle Earth!
All minstrels will be renamed to one of the names of each of the famous rockers. Since there are only four of them and many minstrels, expect a lot of Paaaul and Rinnngo running around.

It’s not often at all that I’m inspired to write a general post spouting off about my opinion on something rather than providing data and information for a question I was asked however, today is one of those days.
Last week, I received a question from a hunter who was frustrated by having trouble getting into groups because the “hunter” slot is always taken up. This hunter mentioned interest in trying to play a crowd control role via the “Trapper of Foes” trait line. Now, I know a hunter in trapper of foes can, absolutely get the job done. Would most group leaders entertain this… no, probably not. Why not? Because not enough people try this and therefore the concept has yet to penetrate the minds of people who’ve closed themselves off from anything that isn’t a “cookie cutter” group.
