I’m sure Doc will be along with a post of his own on this, but as you might have seen the Bullroarer update 5 (Armies of Isengard) patch notes are now up! This looks like an exciting update and I can’t wait to jump on Bullroarer and test it out. In the meantime though, I’ve got a few questions about the update from the lore-master’s perspective
1) How will lore-masters fit into the raid finder?

One of the things I’ve been enjoying doing with the new level cap increase is going back and soloing old group content. The lore-master has always been a strong soloing class, with its toolbox of cc, debuffs, healing (both self and pet) and pets themselves and some of the changes in the expansion have made us an even stronger soloing class. This article goes through some of the basics about preparing for soloing this type of content and I’ll share some of my early experiences. Soloing group content might not be for everyone, but personally I find the challenge pretty exciting in and of itself, and the rewards can be surprisingly good too in terms of deeds, crafting materials, gold and, for the later instances, IXP runes and relic boxes.

This is the second part of a two-part column giving a broad overview of the different trait setups for the lore-master and the different roles it can fulfil in a group. The first part of the column can be found here.

Lore-masters are getting a lot of love with the November update. In addition to combat changes, they’re also getting pretty new cosmetics for their in-combat pets! This makes my lore-master nearly as happy as when she got her Inn League horse.
We’ve had cosmetic options for LM pets for a while now, but honestly, using them was a bit of a pain. In order to have a different looking lynx or bear or other companion, you had to equip an amulet that was generally lacking in stats compared to other necklaces of the same level. There was a work around for this in that you could equip the amulet long enough to summon your pet and then switch to your “real” necklace, but that meant more stuff to fill up your bags and extra button clicking when you needed to re-summon a wayward pet.
Soon, however, we will have talismans! Talismans are items that, once used, will give you a skill that allows you to summon a pet with that appearance. You will still be able to summon a pet with the default appearance, and you can have more than one of these appearance changing skills in your skill journal. The great thing about this is that you won’t have to keep an extra item in your bag just to make your pet look different! Note: Any existing amulets you have will be converted to talismans when the update goes live. You will then be able to use them to gain the skill. However, if you are wearing an amulet for its stats, you will need to find a new necklace.

I love my pets. Everytime I play an alt these days, it is inevitably a pet-less class (since I have no captain) and I feel like I’m missing something as if I were leaving the house without my cell.
It doesn’t seem to be specific to a certain pet either. I typically use my Lynx when in MoNF, my Bog-Lurker when in KoM, my Sabertooth when in a skirmish, and the others when the situation requires. Just that presence of another (pretend) being next to me is what I miss.
Pets don’t make me feel like I’m not playing solo though. They are no substitute for a human being (at least not in Middle Earth). Still, when I come back to my LM after an alt excursion, I pull out my pet and just want to give him/her a good cuddle. Imagine if he/she could then /purr back at me! Or /cuddle or /snuggle! Maybe I’m getting a little too excited about this, but it would be nice if my pet could return the affection I give him/her so freely.

Many folk who first start a Lore-Master have never played a pet class, particularly one which specializes in fellowship support. (Is there any other class in a game that does this?) This week, I’d like to talk about the first pet you receive as a Lore-Master and how you can use her best.
You first receive a pet at Level 4 with the spell “Raven-Lore”. Her name is simply “Raven”. If you are like me and prefer to name your pets unique names which you come to know them by, read below the cut for instructions on how to name change and a detailed discussion of the Raven’s abilities and strategies to best use them.
1) Summon your pet by casting Raven-Lore.
2) Right-click on your pet’s vitals (they are located right under your own).
3) Choose “Rename Raven” and enter the name you’d like her to have.
