Nirn has two moons which dominate the sky. The larger red moon is known as Masser and the smaller silver moon is known as Secunda. The moons are not celestial bodies as we would understand them, but rather they are the remains of Lorkhan and we perceive the results of his death. (I think I have that straight…)

I’ve been messing around with Hugin and trying to create some panoramic screenshots. I think I still need to finetune the process but it’s fun. As ever, click for full size images

I’ve decided to start writing some short posts about the lore of the Elder Scrolls (with links for further information) as I’ve realised that in all this time, a lot of the lore hasn’t actually sunk in Seriously, I’ve been playing a Bosmer (wood elf) since 1996 and I only found out a few weeks ago they are carnivorous and cannibals… So I’ll be attempting to answer such questions as: What exactly is an Elder Scroll? Why does M’aiq the Liar keep popping up? Why did I grin when I found a Nirnroot in ESO? I’m keeping the entries short as there is already a wealth of information out there (particularly the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages), so hopefully these short introductory bites of lore will be interesting reading and helpful to you as well

When I had initially heard that there was going to be an Elder Scrolls MMO, my initial reaction was ugh no! I always play a sneaky thief type and I love being on my own in these games, to the extent that I never used the companion in Skyrim and didn’t even want a co-op version to play with Dimzad (I would say ‘sorry Dimzad’ but he doesn’t read this anyway :P) I’ve always found the games very immersive so the thought of other people sharing my experience was absolutely terrible. However, the slow drip drip of information and the screenshots started to get me thinking about whether it would be fun to play with my friends and whether I could get over my reluctance to share the game world with others. I decided that I should at least give it a go and was lucky enough to get invited to the latest stress test. The highest level I managed was 8, and I’ve heard that the game opens up considerably once past level 15.
I highly recommend reading Isarii’s Comprehensive Review (Tamriel Foundry). It is a very thorough review and well worth reading, especially if you haven’t had a chance to get into beta OR haven’t got past the initial chain of starting areas (like me). Honestly, after reading that review I’m not sure what I can add… so I’ve just added some brief points about various aspects which really caught my attention. Read the rest of this entry »

For the first in my Telon Sunset series, here’s Mallendis the Shaman and Slappy the Cool breaking it down all over Telon (ahem the low levels areas at least!) The whistle is still obtainable via the Isle of Dawn starter area or the in-game store. I did this video partly to commemorate the fun of Slappy and partly to show off some beautiful areas. Still working on my video editing skills

So I’ve ended up cancelling my sub for lotro. It’s partly due to the fact that I’m finding it hard to settle in any MMO (I think the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online may be to blame for that!) However it is also partly due to the current state of the game. I did write a brief review of Helm’s Deep, which in places was quite cautious and/or pragmatic. I still agree that the questlines (particularly the epic questline) are very good and the environment is beautiful. I still ‘kinda like’ the LM class changes – as in there are some new skills and approaches that are fun and innovative but I do miss the pre-Helm’s Deep LM. The class has lost its depth and versatility. Big Battles, well yes they were fun for a while but as I said, they were no replacement for traditional end-game instances. I wasn’t prepared for the increase in dps and I totally wasn’t expecting to be level 95 halfway through the expansion questlines.
Although my playstyle varies between noodling activities (crafting, deeding) and running group instances, the main reason I play an MMO is to overcome challenges with my friends (Dimzad and Aeo). I’ve always particularly liked the way Lotro handles the difficulty factor – bit late? tired? run a T1 instance, in the zone? got enough time? T2 challenge However, with no new traditional instances planned for 2014 and the level of dps reducing the overall level of challenge, it leaves us feeling as though there is no point gearing up and therefore, no point in running instances we’ve already beaten a million times (maybe a slight exaggeration ;)) Read the rest of this entry »

Well even though I guess everyone has heard the news about the impending closure of Vanguard by now, I’ll link to the official statement, the FAQ about SOE all-access and the Reddit AMAA (Smedley) thread anyway. Even though I never made Vanguard my MMO ‘home’, I am truly saddened by this news. Although I’ve never got very far within the game, I have been playing on and off since around 2009 as there is just *something* about the game that keeps pulling me back. The world itself is beautifully designed, the game feels dangerous and challenging (at least compared to other MMOs I’ve played) and the classes and races varied and interesting. I also loved that diplomacy and crafting were distinct and separate spheres (and fun minigames too). I am going to really miss this world.

I can’t quite believe that I’ve been blogging for 5 years now. It’s always been a very simple little blog with a respectably small audience – thank you to all of you who read and comment here I’ve got to know some lovely fellow bloggers and although I am a bit quiet (I really must comment more on other people’s blogs – sorry), I do feel part of the community even if a lot of bloggers would say huh? who? ;)
I started blogging at suzitastarshadow, the blog named after my ranger in EQ2, in February this year, I started blogging at this site as I wanted to lose the ‘suzita’ aspect of the name and I also wanted to reorganise. Read the rest of this entry »
