I’m always blown away when I bring out the Rune-keeper, or any DPS for that matter really, with how easy it is to drop a mob. It’s astonishing to me how quickly things can die when you play a class that’s actually meant to do damage! Before I met my wife, I purely played DPS and utility classes; never a tank. When she met me though, I had discovered how much I loved tanking so she’s never really seen me in that role before, except for a brief time in WoW. And granted, I’m very much out-of-practice, but thankfully thanks to my weekly group I’m getting the hang of being more proactive than a reactive player; making DPS all the more familiar. But even if I didn’t have my group to help me along, nothing will encourage you to blow up mobs like playing a Rune-keeper.
Levels 30 – 40 give you some nice utility skills with Abrupt Words and Weapon of Storm. Using either one of them has its own drawback, but on the whole they round out a Rune-keepers abilities quite well. It’s not hard to see why the Rune-keeper class gives the Hunter class a run for its money when it comes to popularity. Nice healing abilities, great DPS capabilities, some nice utility skills and some amazing skill graphics make for a good player experience. And even though the new patch was a bit unsettling for some players, most have found that despite having to switch chisels or re-arrange their skill rotation they’re still doing really well.

Rune-keepers are usually regarded as a very powerful class when it comes to damage. It’s also been my experience that they make pretty decent healers as well. That being said, a Developer Diary from Brian “Zombie Columbus” Alosio was released talking about the changes that are coming to the class later this month. He states:

This week we talk a lot about the recently released November patch notes, we discuss the LOTRO Lotteries, more about Fall Festival and the news with Codemasters.
Goldenstar is working on gaining reputation with the Ale Association with her Burglar and attempting to win a skeleton horse each night. Still no luck winning that mount.

Today the Bullroarer Patch Notes were updated with the Rune-keeper changes (I’ve included a PDF with the new notes as well for downloading). I have to admit, my RK is only level 40, so I’ don’t really feel that I have the experience to judge a lot of these skills. Most of my time has been focusing on leveling and it’s only now that my characters are getting into Moria and Mirkwood that I’ve felt that tis’ time to sit down and focus on learning the intricacies of each class.
That beings said, I know that before these were released today that some RK’s were not happy with what they had to infer were the changes. From skimming the main discussion thread in the forums, most are stating that the changes are a nerf to lightning, a debatable buff to healing, that most are going to be forced into traiting 5 into fire, and that some of their current LI’s are worthless now due to switching from Lightning to Fire. Of course, a lot of this is reactionary and only a few have actually tested on Bullroarer to see how things will shake out. I’d be interested to see what our readers think as well.

Goldenstar didn’t play too much this week and the one night she did try received login errors. She is working on her hunter still and is working on epic quests in Misty Mountains. The rest of her time has gone to a stressful work week and organizing all our August Contests! Make sure you don’t miss the first of our contests going on now!
Merric is working on his burglar and figuring out if his new leveling plan is the one that works. Goldenstar crushes his dream of the burglar eventually coming his main.

“Tell the Community Team” is where Turbine asks for the players to give them direct and specific feedback about a specific topic. This is really a fantastic opportunity for you to give your thoughts and opinions about the game directly to Turbine to think about.
These “Tell the Community Team” questions focus on Rune-keepers. They plan to focus on all the classes (creeps too) in time so don’t grump if you don’t have a Rune-keeper; you’ll get your turn! They have three questions they are looking for you to give them feedback on:
- Give three examples of changes or improvements you would make to improve the Rune-keeper class (e.g. skills and abilities). Please limit your responses to 3 brief examples. Rune-keepers only please! Other classes will get their chance in coming weeks.
- If you could create one new legacy to add to the Rune-keeper’s Legendary Item pool, what would it be? Please specify whether you feel it should be a Pool A or Pool B legacy.
- Thinking about set bonuses, what bonuses do you find most useful? Least useful? Please give 2 examples of each and please specify which set you are referring to.

The Rune-keeper makes me nervous. In fact, any class that wears cloth usually makes me nervous. Why? Because they can’t take a hit and I’m very much inclined to play a class that can take a hit such as tanks. However, I love the big booms and the skills the Rune-keeper has thrill me; especially Epic Conclusion! Even though I obviously prefer tanks, before I discovered that I was better suited for such a role, I used to exclusively play “wizard” type classes due to their ability to have large destructive damage and (mostly in the D&D world) vast versatility of spells. Ironic though it may be, this class takes me back to those days to a degree with its ability to both heal and create havoc.
However, there are some issues that I have with the class and I think I may need some advice or I need to do some research because I feel that I am not doing something correct. Why? Because I ignore probably 50% of the skills that I have. If they’re not in my rotation or one of the few healing spells I use, I almost never use them unless I’m working on a deed or because I feel bad about not using them.

Just a short post to list a few things that aren’t huge or impact everyone but that you may be interested in knowing about. Enjoy!
- Warden Gambit Quick Reference Sheet by Harperella
We mentioned this on the last podcast but in case you missed it, here is the link to the quick reference sheet for Wardens. It really is a wonderful set up Harperella has put together here and I believe Wardens (especially new wardens) will find this very handy. - Captain Awesome! Or is that Awesome Captains? by Nerf the Cat
A great listing of changes coming to Captains with Book 1 that any Captains or budding Captains may take interest in. - Reflecting on ‘reflection’ -The meaning of Galadriel’s Mirror by Once Upon A Hobbit
Bring a little lore into your life. This isn’t a long extensive reading session but a very informative post about Galadriel’s Mirror. - Turbine Survey
Turbine is sending out random survey links to it’s players. Of those who respond, some could win a $50 American Express Gift Card. Check your email folks and make sure you fill out the survey if you happen to get it! - Runekeeper Skillbar Layout Diagram by Harperella
Another gem posted by Harperella today. This is just a keyboard layout of how she’s plotting her Runekeeper skills. I have a low level Runekeeper myself that will be adapting this plan. I like the idea of setting up my keyboard once from the start and using it throughout the life of the character instead of changing things every couple levels and having to relearn.
LOTRO Classes in WoW Lingo

So you used to play World of Warcraft and now are interested in this amazing game called Lord of the Rings Online. You loved your character in WoW and would like to play something similar to that, if possible. This post is to try to help you find that similar class in LOTRO.
I’m not going to go over every little minute detail of abilities and comparisons. This is more of a high-level comparison of LOTRO features but put in a WoW perspective you should be able to quickly grasp. These two games are unique and there really isn’t a one-to-one comparison available to these characters (so don’t expect things to be a perfect match). Hopefully, the descriptions are enough to help you make that leap into LOTRO a more comfortable one.
Below is a list of the nine available LOTRO classes and what WoW class(es) I believe they are the most similar to. I welcome your feedback and discussions as I obviously have not played every class in both games. My goal is simply to help the WoW convert find the type of play style they previously enjoyed.
