I’m very pleased to point out to everyone’s attention, this post today by Sapience giving an official stance of their reasoning for putting low level store armour in the game as well as some responses to the most common fears and comments about the store items and in fact about Turbine in general.
This is exactly what I think we all needed to hear. An explanation, reasoning and fear reducing verbiage about what this new store offering means for LOTRO.

Loge from Snowbourn was one of the friendly folks who attended GamesCom last week. He went armed with some questions of his own as well as some questions he gathered from the forums hoping to catch a quick moment with Sapience.
He was kind enough to post his discussion with Sapience on the forums. I do encourage you to go read his account but here are the highlights of the discussion.

Hot off the press (or the editing software at least) comes another"Contains Moderate Peril" podcast. This time, Brian and I not only look at the gaming industry, but explore the complex effects that such pastimes have on gamers real life activities and relationships. We both tackle this complex and subjective topic from a position of total ignorance, robustly supported by anecdotal evidence and hearsay. Brian digresses and I rant. Other topics covered include:
- LOTRO: The European Account Migration. How was it for you?
- When is an MMO not an MMO?
- Do all game developers envy the financial success of F2P?
- Is your leisure activity of choice annoying your significant other?

I won't bore you with a superfluous breakdown of the mechanics of the "European Account Migration". This has already been meticulously covered in detail by Adam over at
"The Khazad Guard". If you haven't yet migrated your account then do check out that post first. Please bear in mind that the transfer service may well still be busy due to the volume of traffic. It certainly was yesterday. It took me several hours to successfully access the service and complete the process.

It's been a interesting week since that last podcast, with lot's of major developments in the gaming and film industry. As per usual, Brian and I attempt to discuss some of these with many a digression and decent into prurient humour. Once again we bring are collective experience and expertise, based on decades of playing games and watching TV, to bear on the matters in hand. Here are just a few of the subjects we look at in episode :
- “The Tunnel” is released free of charge for download. Is the film industry finally coming to terms with distribution in the 21st century?
- Is F2P the panacea for the MMO genre?
- European LOTRO account migration.

Finally, as I was recording the latest "Contains Moderate Peril" podcast (and bitching about the LOTRO migration) the above press release was made. The official statement was posted on the Turbine site and the
LOTRO forums. It states a downtime of two to three days. This is a very positive step and the specific amount of time seems reasonable in my opinion. There is still no details on the mechanics of the migration process, although Sapience inferred that this would come from Codemasters as opposed to Turbine.
With the weekend and a bank holiday upon us, there may well be no official communication until the 31st. However, I could be wrong and often am. There is also a link to a page that will be used in the account migration process, but it is not active at present.
http://transfer.lotro.com. I'll post further details as they become available.

Sapience posted an update on the
"EU LOTRO Forums" this afternoon, regarding details of the EU server migration. It does not say anything definitive but certainly alludes to a clear statement emerging soon. Sapience will be attending a meeting today regarding the specifics of the migration process, but that does not take place until 15:00 EST. Therefore, we may not get any further news until tonight or may be tomorrow. Here is a summary of the post.
"Until June 1, all official email communications have to come through Codemasters, so you'll probably see more info from them as things progress.

The sixth "Contains Moderate Peril" podcast is now available, hard on the heels of last weeks episode. The whole enterprise seems to be hitting its stride at the moment so we will continue to produce material as often as we can, despite being described by one listener as "a turd that will not flush". Joining me on the show once again is Brian, formerly of "Mordor Or Bust". In this episode we explore the following topics:
- "World Of Warcraft" is losing subscribers. Not a big deal or indicative of a market change?
- Atari to sell Cryptic Studios. What does this mean for "Star Trek Online".
- Update 3: The Lost legends Of Eriador is coming to LOTRO.
- A selection of your Comments, Tweets and E-Mails.

Sapience posted the following statement on the
EU LOTRO forums today, regarding the migration process and the estimated downtime. As you would expect it was couched in the terms we all know and love and is totally in character. Obviously we are still none the wiser with regard so many questions, but we will enlightened "soon".
As for transition timing, oh how I wish it were all so easy as everyone seems to think. If we could ignore differences in systems, processes, new systems and processes created to facilitate the transition, and all of the legal elements /restrictions surrounding this process and could focus solely on moving many terabytes of data then it would probably be far easier, though still far from 'simple'. Ignoring everything else and focusing just on the legal bits, there are restrictions to what we can move and when.

The official release date for "Update 3" is the 23rd May. There is a preview of various features over on the
"Massively" website. Obviously this new content is only applicable to US customers as Codmeasters are no longer applying updates to the EU build of the game. As the European service is due to be migrated only 8 days later it would be a somewhat redundant exercise (although I'm sure die hard fans would argue otherwise). Among the new content is the instance
"The Inn Of The Forsaken" that has come in for some criticism for being closer to the "The Goonies" than "The Lord Of The Rings"
