I finally sat down yesterday to try and get back in game for some of the festival fun.  One of the things that immediately annoyed me (as it has since Update 5) was the issue with TonicBars and the new in-game plug-in manager.  I decided that I would make this my first project to track down, and was surprised not only how quickly I found the solution but how simple it was.

I hopped over to the plug-in’s LOTRO Interface page and there was a perfect description of the problem and the fix in the comments section (Thanks Magill).  I have no clue what the real issue is, but the fix isn’t too bad at all:

I’ve been pretty quiet lately and that’s mainly due to a lack of playing time with real life and a packed holiday schedule.  But the end of the year usually is a pretty quiet time anyway, so there really wasn’t all that much to write about anyway ;)

I just wanted to toss out a quick post letting folks know what I have in store to kick off the new year:

One of the main unsung portions of the Isengard expansion has been the new changes for Lua, but it was one of those that I was very excited for.  Granted, those updates also broke Lua (fixed with the recent patch), so that gave the system quite the black eye.  After that patch, I’m back to running all my plugins and many (Palantir, Inn of Forsaken, Manager, AltInventor, and Mouse Cursor are the main ones I know of) didn’t require any updates at all to work properly.  I have yet to have any issues with the plugins I run – Palantir, BuffBars, TonicBars, Mouse Cursor Highlighter, Inn of the Forsaken, Combat Analysis, AltInventory, and Manager.  However, there’s been a couple of small but nice changes that I think once someone starts to play with will result in some VERY cool plugins.

The first thing I wanted to point out was that the chat system is now able to be parsed in-game.  While many might not realize how big this is, the initial LOTRO Lua application of this was bringing the popular Combat Analysis plugin fully into the LOTRO client.  No longer do you need to run some external executable, and as such not only is it more secure, it is MUCH faster.  If you’re at all interested in keeping track of your damage (outgoing and incoming), healing, or power sharing I can’t speak highly enough about this plugin.  You can read my review of it in the link above, or head straight to the download page.

In this episode I take some time to cover my thoughts on the Beta and talk about a few of the topics that haven’t been touched on nearly as much.  I also spend a decent amount of time talking about the new things coming down the pipe for Lua plugins.

Thanks again to Zenshi for the iTunes 5-star review, maybe I can get a couple more reviews from folks?

I’ve been trying to figure out what’s going on with my iTunes feed which is why this episode is delayed.  I believe if you delete the podcast and re-add it back to iTunes it should work, but please keep me posted if you guys still have issues.  Episode 18 should be up shortly as well…

How to Keep Your Alts’ Inventories Organized

Probably one of the biggest issues I run into while playing LOTRO is keeping track of which character has what and who needs what.  I shot out a question on Twitter (follow me @docholidayj) and was pleased that not only did I get quick responses but the solution fit my needs exactly!

There are a number of Lua plugins available to help with character inventory organization but the plugin that I’m going to talk about it called Alt Inventory as it allows you to view inventories across all your characters.  Installation is pretty seemless (for a plugin) and once you bring it up on your character you can view that inventory on any of your other characters.  So the shot below is my Captain’s inventory as viewed from my Warden.  Notice up at the top there are Filters you can apply, and in this case I’m just looking at what food he has.

Captain's Inventory viewed from my Warden There’s also an option to view the inventories of all your characters combined.  Notice that when you select an item, it shows you how many of that item are on each of your characters!

Combat Analysis LOTRO Plugin

As many of you probably have figured, I’m a big fan of the Lua Plugins in LOTRO and just started to check out one of the newer ones that’s out there.  The Combat Analysis plugin is a revamp of the CStats application that ran outside of LOTRO, but this now runs inside of the game, and essentially works as a DPS/Healing meter.  There are some potential issues I can see that would bring out the “Gearscore fear,” but for the most part this is a useful tool to help understand how you’re playing your character.

First off, the specifics of the plugin are quite like many others in that you extract it into your plugins folder and launch it when you launch the game.  You also need to enable the Combat Chat logging (select the Combat chat tab, right click and select “Start Logging” under the Chat Logging option) but unlike CStats you don’t need to know where that file lives.  There’s one last thing you need to do is kick off the executable that comes with the plugin to start the log parsing.  This is all explained in the page on LOTRO Interface, but it is a pretty painless and well set up process.  So yes, this does require a little bit of setup but for people like me, it is WELL worth it.

Tanking the Forochel Sari-Surma Instance

Last week I ended up joining one of my normal groups in a late night run of the Sari-Surma instance in Forochel.  This was my first time in there, so I’ll admit I was a little nervous especially since I was tanking.  But luckily the mechanics were interesting but not too terribly tricky to get a hold of.  I actually think this instance is easier on the tank then others as the Osan (boss 2) and Drugoth (boss 3) fights seem to me to be more challenging for the group then on me.  Although, with that being said Drugoth hits for a TON so be prepared to watch your morale plummet!

I did manage to capture the fights via fraps, so enjoy!
