After finishing up a quick run through Sword Halls, the three of us decided that we were in the mood to try something a little more adventurous, so we proceeded to see who all was around and interested in running SG. After a bit we were only able to find one other, but we figured we’d give it a shot and see what happened, worst case it would be a fun wipe. I went in on my Warden and we had a champ, burglar, and rune-keeper to round out the foursome. I actually think that’s pretty optimal for trying this out as you have tanking, damage, crowd-control, and healing all in hand as well as the important fellowship maneuvers from the burglar. Many of the groups I’ve read that have done this use a Captain as their rallying cry can be very helpful in SG but I’m not sure what I’d remove from our group to bring in the Captain. Much to our surprise, things actually went very smoothly for the first two boss fights and we even made it through a couple triple pulls of sorcerers.

As I mentioned yesterday, I ran my first group content recently since the free to play launch so this was really my first chance to get a feel for how Lua would work for me. And I do have to save I’m loving it
It wasn’t a completely stressful case as we didn’t have a Captain, but having an RK as the healer was a pretty good case as they have a number of buffs and HoTs they’ll stack. Overall it was a blast and one of the smoother runs I’ve had in Sammuth Gul (SG) that I can remember, possibly having tons of interrupts was the key
One thing I’ll point out about Lua is that I personally find it very useful and enjoy getting it set up, but I’m sure there are others who don’t like it or don’t want to deal with it. I’m also sure there are some who thing the in-game displays are better and can’t stand the way the Lua scripts display the information. What’ I’m getting at is I’m happy we now have more choices in how our user interface looks such that we can better customize it for our preferences and play-styles.

I ended up getting in a late night Sammuth Gul run last night with a couple of friends. Our group wasn’t quite optimal as we were lacking a traited healer and didn’t have any crowd control. I think I was more worried about the CC then I was the healing (as you’ll see later on) as the loremasters in there are just downright nasty. However, we had lots of DPS, and lots of interrupts which made this a fun and exciting run. I was on my Warden along with a guard, captain, champion, DPS spec’d runekeeper, and a full warrior skald traited minstrel. The trash really wasn’t too bad as we essentially had 4 off-healers in the group and with all the heavies we had lots of spare morale. Our Minstrel was able to stay in War-speech for a good deal of the fights and only towards the end or if we got an unlucky pull did he have to drop out. We had a couple of marathon fights with summoners and unlucky punts onto bone piles, but the ability of our guard to get conjunctions off was key to us being able to move as quickly as we did.
The only part that really worried me was the Gorothol fight as there’s just SO many mobs and things get very crazy in there. As the adds started to pile up we were able to just grab everything in the middle with the guard and myself trying to grab all the agro and the champ and runekeeper doing as much AoE damage as possible. Our minnie was watching out for the loremasters to keep them occupied, trying to keep alive, and trying to toss us the occasional heal. Although, as the following log will show I did a pretty darn good job of keeping myself alive as all the adds are a Warden’s dream
After a while I think the guard and I had the agro shared pretty well but my morale bar wasn’t moving much at all as I just kept cycling through our life-taps and conviction.

Both of us have attempted our first try at Sammath Gul and we made it to the second boss before things went bad. Goldenstar feels a bit responsible for not being able to heal everyone. We briefly discuss small changes that may make the encounter easier.
Goldenstar and Merric attempted to duo the Rift skirmish and did not do well on the final boss. Azz said he thought we could do it together and he was right so now Goldenstar has finished Volume 3 Book 1. Yay!
