Family
Before I get into what games I’m looking forward to, I wanted to mention some personal and blog related things. My wife and I are expecting our second little Kae to show up sometime in June. I’m sure that’s going to kill any time I have to play MMOs for a few months. I really dislike logging into an MMO, when I don’t know if I’m going to get pulled away at a second’s notice. When my son was born, I focused mostly on single player games, since I could pause it and go do father things without worrying about ruining anyone else’s game.
Not playing MMOs will either mean that this blog goes silent for a few months, or you’ll see tons of posts as I’ll have lots of time to read, think, and write.

Xbox
Last January, I wan’t looking forward to much on the Xbox. In fact, there were just two games: Mass Effect 3 and Batman: Akham City. Unfortunately Mass Effect 3 was delayed, but Akham City more than made up for that. The game had everything I loved about the first Batman game but added improvements, and even though I’ve finished the game, I still pop it into my console occasionally to beat on some thugs.
Outside of Arkham City, my Xbox didn’t get much playtime, which I guess is why it decided to red-ring on me in December. I had hoped by waiting through the first few manufacturing runs and getting an Elite, that I had dogged all of the overheating problems with Microsoft’s console. I was wrong. The repair process was relatively painless: go online and submit a repair request, print out a label, box and ship it out. I just wish it hadn’t cost me $99.

Here is the first Contains Moderate Peril podcast of 2012. Brian and I get straight on with the matter in hand and continue doing pretty much the same as what we were doing last year. Namely, discussing what we are currently playing and also looking at wider aspects of this popular and growing industry.
- Weekly Summary: As usual, we recap what we’ve been up to in the last week or so. Obviously due to the recent holiday period, there has not been quite as much gaming as we would like. [00:41]

DocHoliday's MMO Saloon
While not 100% the issue of why I’ve been quiet lately, certainly Thanksgiving has been a pretty big part of it. Probably my favorite food holiday, with people coming over this year, we had to do a little more prep work to get ready for things. Combine that with a needed time of relaxation and a couple things I’ll get to, I haven’t had the time or desire to write much.
Before I get into what else has been going on, I do have episodes recorded that I still need to get edited for both of my podcasts. I also will be recording new episodes this week, as well as doing interviews with the developers of both. So there should be a few new episodes coming out soon

Due to conflicting schedules, I had to cancel both the respective podcast recording sessions this week. However, Brian and I managed to get something sorted today by the skin of our teeth. The two main subjects we talk about this time are Brian’s return to LOTRO, courtesy of a Black Friday sale of ROI and of course the final SWTOR beta test. We talk about both these subjects at some length, one being a established game reaching a major crossroad in 2012 and the other being a new title that many gamers are pinning their hopes on. We also discuss a special offer that came my way and that has turned out to be most advantageous.
- Weekly round up. Brian plays the final SWTOR Beta and returns to an old favourite, as a result of a seasonal bargain. I also indulge in the testing of a well known franchise MMO, explore the Spec Ops options for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and get an interesting deal care of my ISP [00:39]

Most of the MMOs that I have played over the years have had a plethora of servers to play on. This is still very much the norm with gamers being given the opportunity to choose between different play styles such as PVE, PVP or RP. This is particularly common to the MMO genre. In the past, servers are segregated between geographical regions to resolve language differences or technical issues such as lag. However even this has changed, with LOTRO recently moving to at least a central geographical point of presence. Ongoing changes to server technology and ever increasing internet connection speeds have made the concept of megaservers viable.
DC Universe Online will be moving to a new megaserver structure Monday. A new developer diary has been posted on the respective benefits of the process, to help get everyone orientated. The selling points are more people on servers and better grouping opportunities. However there are other repercussions to consider. Character names will have to be changed in the case of duplicates. Preference will be given to those who have spent the highest periods online, although there will be the means to replace a system generated rename, if one is imposed. It should also be noted that PC and PSN communities for this title will remain segregated. I also think that the recent security outages associated with Sony have played a part in this move.

We seem to be having a lot more fun each time we record a “Contains Moderate Peril” Podcast”. I’ll leave it to listeners to judge whether that is a good or bad thing. As per usual there’s a lot to talk about in both the world of gaming and cinema. We’ve also try a new experimental part of the show. Depending on feedback it could become a permanent feature or be jettisoned. I’ve noticed that no one is commenting on the length of the podcasts that seems to be averaging out at eighty minutes or so, each week. Also, would the addition of a third presenter be beneficial? It has come to our attention that we are not adequately representing both genders at present.
In this weeks podcast, Brian and I discuss the following subjects:
