For a long time people have been asking for LOTRO related merchandise, however due to copyright issues Turbine was unable to actually have any licensed products.  However, that all seems to have changed with their acquisition by Warner Brothers!  Today several products were announced and have been released to the Warner Brothers online store.  So far two mugs and three mousepads are available for $14.95 and $12.95 (USD) respectively.  Hopefully this just marks the beginning of a new line of products.  Because if you’re like me, you have the perfect place to put up a poster or a figurine.

I’ve found two gaming sites that have some official interviews with Warner Bros and Turbine staff discussing the merger and the free to play announcement today.

First is on GamePro where there is an interview with Warner Interactive President Martin Tremblay, and Turbine CEO Jim Crowley. This interview talks about the merger, the free to play plan as well as ideas of where the Warner Bros/Turbine plan is leading.

Second is from mmorpg.com where there is an interview with Turbine’s Executive Director of Communications Adam Mersky and LOTRO Executive Producer Kate Paiz This really isn’t a question and answer interview article. There was only one quote in the entire thing that I could find but perhaps the entire article was a response from Kate with a small paragraph from Adam at the end? Unsure but they’re calling it an interview and it concerns LOTRO so thought I should let you know!

SWINGS & ROUNDABOUTS

With mounting worries about the LOTRO’s future after the Warner Bros buyout, allied to speculation about Turbine’s financial health (WB wouldn’t have bought it if it wasn’t profitable or it wouldn’t have been sold if it was in good health – take your pick!), there has been a marked tendency for observers, educated and otherwise, to ascribe the apparent decline in the game’s quality over the last year to the lifetime subscription experiment. While conceding the value of the original financial shot in the arm during LOTRO’s early days, the argument goes, we lifetime subscribers are now parasitic on the game, contributing nothing to development. Indeed, some forum posts have suggested, lifetime subscribers are largely responsible for the current doldrums. By the same token, many lifetimers moan that for these reasons, Turbine regards them as less that the dust on its feet, and completely fails to take their interests to heart – the not illogical implication here being that this particular group of players is more likely to be picky and demanding.

I say that’s rubbish. It’s true that lifetimers no longer pay a monthly subscription; on the other hand, this scenario completely ignores the crucial fact that lifetime subscribers actually represent a large and essentially captive pool of customers for paid expansions. Let me put it this way: say that a monthly subscriber, cheesed off by the paucity of content since Vol. III/Book 1 was released earlier this year, decides to cancel his subscription on 1 May. From this point on, both the lapsed subscriber and a lifetime subscriber are contributing the same amount to Turbine’s kitty, namely nothing. However, let’s be optimistic and say that on 1 November, Turbine release a wonderful new boxed expansion, with a new landmass and even (as long as we’re dreaming) a fully revised LI system, retailing for about 30 euros. My guess is that at that point, the vast majority of lifetime subscribers, even those who perhaps haven’t logged on since early summer, will fork out for the expansion – after all, the game hasn’t cost them anything for over half a year, and what’s more, there is little or no hassle involved. However, what are the chances that lapsed monthly subscribers will do the same, given that just buying the box won’t be enough – they’ll also have to go to the trouble and expense of re-subscribing?

We catch up on what our Runekeeper/Hunter duo is up to. We are in Agaumar in the Lone-lands and are now both level 30. We spend some time arguing if Merric’s tracking on his hunter is worth waiting for. Goldenstar says no.

Goldenstar’s lottery curse has been listed as her burglar has finally won a spring pony as well as a couple other lotteries.

We of course spend some time talking about what we think of the Warner Bros. acquisition of Turbine.

We have some official information from Marketroid from Turbine about the acquisition of their company by Warner Bros.

Many of you have asked what this means for your game experience. The simple answer is that we don’t expect much to change for the foreseeable future. We remain committed to each of our games as we move forward. This change in corporate ownership is not expected to affect our current product portfolio. We’re still the company that brings you AC, DDO, and LOTRO.

Most importantly, not only do we remain fully committed to our core franchises but will seek to grow them aggressively going forward. We’re looking forward to putting our newfound muscle behind your favorite games as we grow into our new role within the WB family of companies.

Dealing with F.U.D. (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt)

So as most of you know, last night it was announced that Warner Bros. has acquired Turbine.  But what does this mean to us:  the gamers, the bloggers, the podcasters… the fans?  Initially I felt a sense of dread and in my mind I saw a huge, red wall of bureaucracy coming down between the channel of communication that we as players and also as a fan site have been able to establish with Turbine.  Will there no longer be interviews with Developers?  Will their activity on the forums be curtailed?  Will they be as open to the players and fan sites as they have in the past?  Will PAX be a completely different experience from now on because of Warner Bros??

But then after a while, after taking a breath, I realized that there was no reason to panic and that maybe this is a good thing.  I mean Warner does own the movie rights to “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”, they have also purchased other gaming studios such as Snowblind, (the assets of) Midway, TT Games, and Rocksteady Studios; and the world hasn’t ended for those people. In fact, this could open up a lot more resources for Turbine than they have had in the past such as voice acting talents, artists, open up new jobs and even might allow them to be more lax about what they can and cannot use in the game (such as names and places).  And who knows, with the weight of Time Warner behind them, maybe we can finally see some LOTRO themed  T-shirts, posters, action figures, or other items that can be purchased.
